When 2006 MSU graduate Alicia Bowerman moved to New York City three years ago, she had no job prospects but had plenty of MSU contacts. “It’s a small world, even though it’s New York City,” Bowerman said, laughing. “I mean, I run into people I went to basketball games with my freshman year.”

Students protest in-state tuition increases

Students with green-and-white picket signs gathered Thursday at the Administration Building asking passers-by to sign a petition that seeks to cap tuition costs. A Facebook group called the Michigan State University Transparency and Accountability Initiative organized the protest, but representatives from the MSU Young Democratic Socialists also were present, among others.

That’s why chemistry and biochemistry and molecular biology assistant professor Kevin Walker has created a more efficient process to manufacture a leading cancer drug, known as paclitaxel, or Taxol.

Tax day protest draws thousands to Capitol

Signs painted “Taxed Enough Already!” and “Stop Reckless Spending!” were scattered throughout a crowd of about 5,000 gathering on the Capitol lawn in Lansing, where Samuel Joseph “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher hosted a rally in honor of tax day.

Hovering through headwinds

Despite racking up 18,500 flights-worth of miles last year alone, MSU doesn’t track frequent flier miles on flights for university business. MSU officials said they continue to evaluate this policy as the university weighs a possible tuition increase, program cuts and layoffs to address shortfalls in a budget plagued by rising costs and decreased state funding.

Undergraduates to present research

MSU undergraduates will present research projects today at the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum in the Union. The forum, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., features the projects of more than 600 MSU undergraduates that range from genetic mapping to creative writing.

Distinguished alumnus to speak at LBC commencement

A Lyman Briggs College alumnus will speak at the first commencement held by the college since the decision to reinstate it in 2006. Capt. Kenneth Earhart is commander of the Cairo, Egypt-based infectious disease research facility U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3, or NAMRU-3.

Council discusses budget, proposes tax hikes

Water, sewage and aging city infrastructure were among items in the 2009-10 fiscal year budget discussed at Tuesday’s East Lansing City Council work session. Council members were presented with the first section of the of the city’s 2009-10 fiscal year budget, which involved general funds.
