Letters to the Editor - Submissions
We welcome thoughtful commentary from our readers on issues of interest and stories of interest to our audience. Letters should contribute meaningfully to public discourse and reflect the diverse perspectives within our MSU community.
Submission Requirements:
- Maximum 300 words.
- Preference given to those with reference a story, editorial, or issue covered in the past 30 days, but can address topics relevant to our readers (Michigan State University, City of East Lansing) that we may not have covered.
- Include full legal name, major/year in college or occupation, mailing address, and phone number for verification.
- A valid email address is required for correspondence.
- We will not publish any anonymous submissions.
Editorial Standards:
- Letters must be factually accurate with verifiable sources for any claims. Include links or citations to verify facts.
- Authors are limited to one published letter per 30-day period.
- Letters should be exclusive to The State News -- no form letters, mass submissions, or coordinated campaigns.
- Letters previously published by other news publications will not be republished.
- The State News does not accept letters from organizations on behalf of another individual; submissions should be original content created by the submitter.
- Letters on behalf of organizations must be from authorized representatives.
- Selected pieces will be published with a clearly defined "Letter to the Editor" label before the headline.
- Published letters will not be removed from our website.
Publication Process:
We reserve the right to edit for length, clarity, grammar, and style while preserving the writer's intent. Not all submissions can be published due to editorial considerations, including our commitment to accuracy and the need to verify submitted information. Selected letters will be published within two weeks of submission (during the academic year), and authors will be contacted before publication. Submission does not guarantee publication.
