Guest Commentary - Submissions
Our guest commentary section offers a platform for in-depth analysis and diverse perspectives on matters of public importance. We see well-reasoned arguments that inform and engage our readers.
Submission Guidelines:
- 600-800 words (strict limit).
- Original, unpublished content exclusive to our publication.
- Content should be relevant to Michigan State University students, staff, and faculty. Guest commentary can include commentary on current events, personal essays or reflections, and explanatory pieces, among others.
- Include a brief author biography (2-3 sentences) highlighting relevant experience or perspective.
- We will not publish any anonymous submissions.
Content Standards:
- Present a clear thesis with supporting evidence from credible sources.
- Maintain a civil tone while addressing controversial topics.
- Avoid personal attacks or inflammatory language.
- Commercial promotional content will not be accepted.
Author Requirements:
- Relevant experience, expertise, or unique perspective on the subject matter.
- Provide complete contact information for verification and editing queries.
- Authors may publish a guest commentary once per month.
Review Process:
All submissions undergo editorial review for accuracy, fairness, and adherence to journalistic standards. We may request revisions or fact-checking documentation. Publication decisions are made within 14 days of submission (during the academic year). Selected pieces will be clearly labeled as "Guest Commentary" and may include an editor's note providing context when appropriate.
General Policy Notes:
- All submissions become the property of the publication upon submission.
- We do not provide compensation for published letters or commentary submissions.
- Anonymous submissions will not be considered.
- Content must comply with applicable laws regarding defamation and privacy.
- The Editor-in-Chief reserves final authority over all publication decisions, with input from the Opinion Desk Coordinator, who brings all content to the attention of the EIC before publication.
