Bill passes to strip some graduate students of right to unionize

State senators quickly pushed through a bill Wednesday that would strip some graduate student employees of the right to bargain for pay and other benefits through labor unions. The bill, which first was introduced in the Senate last week, would prohibit graduate research assistants from forming unions, which are designed to protect the rights of student workers.

Alumnus runs 73 marathons, inspires runners on campus

Today, Steve Coffman, 64, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from MSU in 1969 and 1976 respectively, has run in 73 marathons and is preparing for his 74th in April, this year’s Boston Marathon. It will be Coffman’s 35th consecutive Boston Marathon.

MSU, Nebraska play first game on Senior Day

It’s time to say goodbye. Before the MSU women’s basketball team (17-10 overall, 9-5 Big Ten) takes on No. 23 Nebraska (20-6, 9-5) on Thursday at 7 p.m., the Spartans will honor senior guard Porschè Poole and senior forwards Taylor Alton and Lykendra Johnson for Senior Day.

I am very encouraged to learn that the proposal to strengthen Michigan’s renewable energy standard to 25 percent by 2025 has the support of Democrats, Republicans and independents.

In a time when preserving the environment is a concern on the minds of many people, the city of East Lansing is doing its part in going green, and hopefully encouraging residents to do the same. Plans to install two electric car charging stations in the city were presented on Feb.

Yalley Sackett, 8, grabbed his blue lunch box off the counter and packed his backpack. It was time to head to school. He sat in the backseat of the car, looking out the window as his mom, Ella Sackett, drove him through MSU’s campus to Red Cedar Elementary School, located at 1110 Narcissus Drive, last Friday.

Evidence disputed at pretrial for Marion Jr.

At the pretrial for David Marion Jr. in Lansing’s 30th Circuit today, possible police evidence against Marion was argued to be invalid by his lawyer. Marion is on trial for allegedly murdering Owen Goodenow, 23, and then-MSU student Darren Brown, 18, in March 2010 in the process of stealing a safe containing about a pound of marijuana and $1,250 in cash.

One year ago, the MSU men’s basketball team was in a much different position than it is now. With four games left in the regular season, the Spartans held a 15-11 record and were clinging to their NCAA Tournament hopes.

MSU research continues to grow with increased funding

Officials are looking at continued growth in research dollars awarded to MSU thanks to an $18 million increase compared to the previous fiscal year. The university took in nearly $439 million in research awards during fiscal year 2010-11, attributed to MSU’s competitive faculty and their work, said J. Ian Gray, vice president for research and graduate studies.

A 22-year-old female student reported her wallet was stolen between 12-5 p.m. Feb. 17 from the first floor of the Chemistry Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

City Council extends What Up Dawg? hours to sell hot dogs, beer

During its Tuesday night meeting, the East Lansing City Council unanimously approved an application from local hot dog restaurant What Up Dawg? to extend its hours of operation and its beer sales, a move that could impact the rest of downtown’s post-bar dining scene. At the council’s regular meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road., members approved an application from the owners of What Up Dawg?, 317 M.A.C Ave., to extend its beer sales until 2 a.m. and its dining room operations until 3 a.m.
