Jairus Jones out six weeks with MCL injury

With the first of two bye weeks underway, the MSU football team is hoping the extra rest will prove beneficial for players on the mend. For senior linebacker Jairus Jones, it will be at least six weeks before he returns to action after suffering a medial collateral ligament, or MCL, injury against Notre Dame, head coach Mark Dantonio announced.

Two seasons, two identical records. That’s the situation facing the MSU football team (3-1) following a weekend loss to No. 22 Notre Dame after opening victories against Western Michigan, South Florida and Youngstown State.

Men's soccer plays No. 3 Creighton to 2-2 draw

After holding onto a one goal lead twice in the game, the men’s soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw against No. 3 Creighton in Omaha, Neb. Tuesday night. The Spartans (4-1-1 overall) were tested early on by the dangerous Bluejay offense. Bruno Castro and Timo Pitter were both off target before the ten minute mark.

No excuse not to call 911 to report assault

No one ever expects to be sexually assaulted or to have someone they love be sexually assaulted. Sometimes, it’s easier to dismiss the headlines in the paper as far-removed stories than it is to accept them as reality. But after 26-year-old Oswald Scott Wilder, of Vernon, Mich., confessed to committing four sexual assaults this summer in East Lansing, the MSU community can’t afford to ignore reality.

When it comes to two of the most successful women’s soccer players in school history, the numbers speak for themselves. Three All-American selections. Five All-Big Ten selections. Forty-nine wins in college. One hundred and seven wins and just one loss in high school. Four consecutive high school state championships. Numerous MSU women’s soccer records.

Ahern, Cassidy rising early for field hockey

Last season, then-sophomore forward Allie Ahern scored a career-high of five goals for the season. Nine games into the 2013 season, she already has seven. Her goal total leads the team and is in a three-way tie for second-highest in the Big Ten.

Yesterday was the last time many girls will see their boyfriends for a while. One of the most popular video game franchises in the world, FIFA Soccer, released their 2014 version on Tuesday at locations across the country.

Man accused of East Lansing sexual assaults has first court appearance

The man accused of four sexual assaults in East Lansing made his first court appearance Tuesday and will soon face testimony from all four of his alleged victims. Wilder, 26, is accused of initiating four sexual attacks near MSU’s campus between March 30 and May 16. He appeared for his pretrial conference before 54-B District Court Judge Andrea Larkin Tuesday morning.

Proposal to cap bar patrons on city radar

A proposal that could prevent the addition of future bars serving alcohol past midnight in East Lansing remains on the minds of city officials, local businesses and residents. Members of the East Lansing Planning Commission are scheduled to discuss the matter again Sept.

Impact 89FM looking to install texting request system

MSU’s student radio station Impact 89FM is considering the use of a new technology that could update the way listeners communicate with the station. Impact program The Vibe, which features a mix of hip-hop, rap, R&B, soul, funk and reggae, currently is conducting a trial run of a text messaging service that will allow students to text their requests to Impact’s landline.

Bisexual students, supporters raise awareness with on-campus event

Who would you do for a Klondike bar? Several bisexual students and supporters asked the question of passerby Monday as they took part in Celebrate Bisexuality Day. Held each year on Sept. 23, the international holiday attempts to raise awareness of bisexuality and remove stigmas and stereotypes often associated with the community.

Engagement centers host parties throughout campus

MSU’s neighborhood engagement centers are hosting open houses to familiarize students with the resources available to them on campus. The open houses are set up like fairs, with food provided by Culinary Services, games and chances to win prizes. Participating students are given “passports,” which are a map of opportunities at the open house.
