Before Michigan teachers head to the classroom they are tested in a basic skills area and their academic specialty, but for the rest of their careers they never again have to demonstrate even the most basic understanding of their field.

Forum to discuss MIP, drunken driving laws

LANSING - The Lansing City Council will hold public hearings on proposed changes to its drunken driving and minor in possession ordinances Monday. The changes would increase penalties for each of the offenses, bringing them in line with new state laws. “Basically, we’re doing this because the state law, which has been changed within the last year or so, made some changes to the penalties,” said Councilmember Joan Bauer, chairwoman of the Public Safety Committee.

Everywhere I go, problems and stress are pouring out of people’s conversations and sizzling on the sidewalks, heating up everyone else that walks over them. Around this time of year it seems like everything is coming down on everyone, at least from the conversations I’ve been a part of or overheard in random places.

I don’t smoke, nor do I find any interest in doing so. I tried it once for a two-week period during my sophomore year of college, but quit because it didn’t do it for me and I found that my workout sessions weren’t as prevalent since my lungs were less capable of doing their duties.

Two students attending a rally in this West Michigan city, Becky Wiechman and Michelle Lubbers, could only show moral support for George Bush during his bid, but have made up their minds to do the next best thing this year - cast a ballot for his son, Texas Gov.

Hillel encourages students to support peace at rally

Supporters of peace in the Middle East gathered Monday night at the rock on Farm Lane for a nonpolitical rally to speak out against the violence that has claimed dozens of lives.The event, sponsored by the Hillel Jewish Student Center, attracted about 50 people from the university community.

MASON - Even the sky seemed to be in mourning Monday. Raindrops fell lightly as tears trickled down the cheeks of the hundreds who gathered to say farewell to horse management sophomore Amanda Awalt. Awalt died Thursday after a horse riding accident near her parents’ Mason home.

U to preserve farm literature for state

MSU libraries plan to revisit a part of history.The university was chosen to participate in a national project to preserve literature that documents unique agricultural and rural heritage.Twenty states have become involved in the National Preservation Program for Agricultural Literature since its start in 1996.The program is directed by staff members at Cornell University’s Mann Library.“It’s both an honor and a responsibility to be chosen,” said Cliff Haka, director of libraries at MSU.

Detroit defensive end gives verbal commitment to U

Despite sitting in last place in the Big Ten, MSU’s football program lured another recruit to East Lansing with the verbal commitment of 6-foot-5-inch, 260-pound defensive end Kevin Vickerson.Vickerson, who committed at the end of July, has still been visiting other colleges this fall, but said MSU is definitely where he’ll be headed next year.“I loved the atmosphere there,” he said.

MERIDIAN TWP. - Greeted by a line of political signs and supporters, state Sens. Dianne Byrum and Mike Rogers made their way to Okemos on Monday night for another in a series of debates. The 8th Congressional District race between Onondaga Democrat Byrum and Brighton Republican Rogers has become one of the most-watched in the country and could decide the control of the U.S.

After an outstanding spring film festival exhibited more than 100 films from around the world, the East Lansing Film Festival has begun taking entries for eligible films for its 2001 festival.“We have already received some submissions,” said Jennifer White, the festival’s director.
