Group looks at effect of social norm programs

A growing number of campuses are telling students that their peers drink more responsibly than they may think, but little information is available to show if such efforts result in safer drinking practices.But a Massachusetts-based education policy group is collecting data from 34 colleges nationwide to prove such campaigns - known as social norms programs - lead to more responsible drinking by college students.“To date the effectiveness has been largely anecdotal,” said Helen Stubbs, a spokeswoman for the Education Development Center Inc. “Certainly it’s been shown to work on some campuses.”Studies show most students think other students drink heavily, when in reality most abstain or drink moderately, Stubbs said.

Basketball tourney gives us plenty of surprises

Fans loyalties split between U teams

Two MSU sports teams battled Sunday - against each other. While the MSU men’s basketball and hockey teams competed in the national spotlight in their respective sports, they also fought each other for television airtime in East Lansing bars and restaurants. The men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four by defeating Temple 69-62 - just moments before the hockey team moved on to the Frozen Four by beating Wisconsin 5-1. Although studies suggest members of fraternities and sororities may drink more frequently and more heavily than most college students, researchers say greeks are not more likely to use alcohol after graduation.The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia, questions what leads greeks to drink more in college.

GRAND RAPIDS - MSU alumnus Roger Smith came prepared for the top-ranked hockey team’s game against Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon.Knowing only 40 minutes separated the start times of the second-round NCAA Tournament hockey game and the men’s basketball team’s Elite Eight showdown with Temple in Atlanta, Smith and four friends did their best to be in two places at once.“I bought the TV yesterday and they’re getting it back tomorrow,” Smith said, describing a portable Casio he bought at a local appliance store and brought to Sunday’s hockey game so he could watch both Spartan teams earns berths in the Final Four.Smith, 24, of East Lansing, was one of many Spartans caught in a fun dilemma this weekend - whether to chant “The Spartans play good ball” or “The Spartans play good hockey.”Turns out, the two-hour mid-afternoon block where the MSU icers and hoopsters occupied much of America’s airwaves turned into quite a party.The hockey team blew out the Badgers 5-1 at Van Andel Arena.

The Minnesota Room of the Union was full Thursday night; its occupants sitting in a riveted silence.“More than one of you has someone in your family that’s intersexed,” Cheryl Chase, the executive director of the Intersex Society of North America, told the audience of more than 40 people.One in 2,000 babies - or five children per day - are born intersexed, Chase said during her about 30-minute speech.

Monkey ear research helps understand human hearing

If a tree falls in the woods, would a monkey be able to hear it?Michael Harrison, a professor of physics and astronomy, presented a paper to the American Physical Society last week during its five-day meeting in Seattle that could help explain why monkeys don’t hear as well as humans.“I began to get interested in these problems when I realized the subject I was working on, the mechanics of vibration, had a good deal to do with the way hearing takes place in mammals,” Harrison said.

The Spartan hockey team makes the last stop on its road to Albany, N.Y., this weekend, hoping to validate its ticket to the New York state capital for a second Frozen Four berth in three years. Student represents Hollywood on campus

While many MSU students spend their free time sleeping or relaxing in front of the television, Ian Wallace partakes in another kind of recreation.Wallace is the Michigan College Marketing Representative for urban music.“My duties are to get contacts at all college radio stations, college newspapers, media and television shows to try to get reviews and make sure our artists are getting enough airplay and publicity,” he said.The supply chain management junior hopes to be involved in the record industry someday and sees his current status as a good segue into the profession.“I’m leaning toward the music industry and this has really changed my focus,” he said.

E.L. program receives national accreditation

The East Lansing Recreation & Arts program has become the first organization in the state to receive accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies.The program had to meet 154 standards set by the national agency for its human resources, finance, facility safety, program and instructor quality and diversity.“We had a lot of stuff in place already,” Executive Director Jim Crisp said.
