Mr. Black MSU candidate to promote unity

This is the first in a five-part series profiling the contestants of the Mr. Black MSU pageant. Jason McGhee said Mr. Black MSU has an important function in the black student community. “He’s a leader and a role model to the black community - someone people look up to and respect,” the studio art junior said. McGhee, a minority aide in Holmes Hall, said he hopes to take on those duties by gaining the title Saturday. The Mr. Black MSU pageant, sponsored by Black Student Alliance, profiles black male undergraduates who stand out academically, through their student leadership on and off campus. Marketing senior DeAndre Carter, founder and president of DCI Motivational Services, a motivational speaking business, was crowned the first Mr. Black MSU last year. BSA President Tonya Upthegrove said the event recognizes students making a difference in MSU’s black community. “We want to dispel the myth of this being a beauty pageant,” the communication senior said.

Graduate employees call for change, legal voice

The small room located underneath the Division Street parking garage shuddered recently as yet another car passed overhead.Accommodations might not be glamorous.But the office plays host to some lofty goals.It’s home to the newly formed Graduate Employees Union, which hopes to organize graduate assistants at MSU in order to negotiate new working conditions.The union, affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO, presented a petition to the Michigan Employment Relations Commission on Feb.

Spartans complete sweep of Alaska-Fairbanks

It took a little longer than expected, but top-ranked MSU eventually provided a grand finale for a crowd of 6,329 at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday night.The Spartans (30-4-4), playing at Munn for the last time this season, completed their first-round CCHA playoff sweep by topping Alaska-Fairbanks 3-2 in overtime.Senior left wing Sean Patchell slipped a puck through Nanook goaltender Lance Mayes’ legs 7:18 into the extra frame for the game-winner.“As if I didn’t have enough memories already,” Patchell said of his MSU career.

CHICAGO - It looked like MSU had found a way to stop Joe Crispin during the Spartans’ opening round game Friday night against Penn State.But it takes two halves of basketball to keep the Big Ten’s deadliest shooter in check.Attempting only one shot it the first 10 minutes, Crispin strugged to find open looks due to the Spartans’ strict team defense.“In the first haf I concentrated on distributing the ball and tried not to be as aggressive,” Crispin said of his 1-of-5 first-half shooting from the field.

The Spartans’ senior class celebrated its last regular season home game the only way it knows how - by clinching at least a share of MSU’s fourth-straight men’s basketball Big Ten Championship.Led by the five members of the defending champion’s senior class - guard Charlie Bell, guard Mike Chappell, guard David Thomas, guard Brandon Smith and forward Andre Hutson - the third-ranked Spartans (24-3 overall, 13-3 Big Ten) toppled intrastate rival Michigan (10-17, 4-12) 78-57 on Saturday.

Vet students take part in reality TV

The next dose of reality television will be prescribed by MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine.MSU’s campus will be the setting for “Vet School Confidential,” a brand new program for the Animal Planet cable network.The lives of several MSU veterinary students will be documented in the 13-episode series, to air next fall.“You aren’t going to watch it and learn how to be a vet,” said Chris Oldroyd, a producer with Rocket Pictures, which is creating the show for Animal Planet.

Study tests drug to treat cold sores

Don’t ask Deborah Sudduth about cold sores - she’s suffered from them, off and on, for the last 10 years. Two months ago, Sudduth, an executive assistant to the dean in the College of Nursing, participated in a MSU study that cured her cold sores in less than two days. “I’ve never had an experience like that before,” Sudduth said.

Record crowd sees Spartans trounce U of M

Watching Thursday night’s season-ending game against archrival No. 6 Michigan, you wouldn’t have guessed that the top-ranked Spartan hockey squad had quite little on the line. Already assured of a CCHA regular season championship, the Spartans were relaxed but focused in a 3-1 dismantling of the Wolverines (22-11-5 overall, 15-9-3 CCHA). The Spartans (28-4-4, 21-4-3) are 3-1-0 against their rivals this season. After the final horn sounded, commissioner Tom Anastos presented the team with the CCHA regular season trophy, with which the Spartans made a lap around the ice. “I think the fans here tonight can appreciate tonight’s game,” MSU head coach Ron Mason said.

Iraq encouraged Allied airstrikes

Last Friday’s attack on the five Iraqi Air Defense sites was provoked, contrary to Brian Emerson Jones’ column (“Latest bombings will only enforce stereotypes,” SN 2/21). In the month of January alone, Iraq launched over a dozen surface-to-air missiles at British and American planes patrolling the no-fly zone, more than were launched in all of last year.
