Students crunched into unroomy rooms

It’s not just tuition that has increased.Now that Shaw Hall has been shut down temporarily, more students are being put into other residence halls, meaning some of them have to deal with having two, three, even four other roommates.Dave Wilson, a computer science freshman, shares his Akers dorm room with four other students although it is designated for three.“The biggest problem with having five people in a room is the lack of space,” Wilson said.

Frat and sorority scene makes mark

For MSU students, greek chapters are among the most popular organizations on campus.According to the 2002 edition of The Princeton Review’s “The Best 331 Colleges,” MSU is the sixth highest college in the nation for a “major frat and sorority scene.”“I think it’s a good thing that people recognize that we’re here,” said Billy Molasso, assistant director of Student Life.

MSU to celebrate 150th anniversary with Freshman photography contest

The freshman class is getting snap-happy this week.As this year’s freshman class will graduate in 2005 - the university’s 150th year - the department of Libraries, Computing and Technology gave each incoming freshman a disposable camera to capture their first moments at MSU.“These pictures will literally be a snapshot of the class that will mark (the 150th) benchmark of the university,” said Don Straney, assistant to the provost for faculty development.

Warrant issued for husband in Salerno case

The Ingham County prosecutor’s office issued a warrant Friday morning for Dennis Michael Salerno in the killing of his wife, MSU graduate student Michelle Rizzi Salerno.Dennis Salerno recently began serving a 22-year-to-life sentence in an Ohio prison for the murder of his longtime friend Larry McClanahan of Moscow, Ohio.The East Lansing Police Department participated in the yearlong investigation into Michelle Salerno’s death along with the Michigan State Police, Ohio’s Wood County Sheriff’s Department and the Bowling Green University Police Department.

Image-enhancing City Center near completion

A major project in downtown East Lansing is beginning to take shape after a year of construction and more than five years of planning. The City Center Project is a $30 million revitalization of the downtown, which includes a CVS Pharmacy, condominiums that will bring the first owner-occupied housing to the downtown in at least 60 years and office space.

The work on M.A.C. Avenue could be constructing the financial futures of some local businesses. Many privately owned businesses have seen a drop in clientele on the opposite side of the condominiums that are going up. The condos are part of the City Center Project - a $30 million revitalization to the downtown - which is slated to finish in spring 2002.
