Golfers eke into nationals

A little more than 35 feet determined whether the MSU women’s golf team would end its season or earn a trip to the NCAA National Championship. And luckily for the Spartans, the Big Ten Athlete of the Year, senior Emily Bastel, was lining up the hard-breaking putt. With the team’s fate in her hands and the end of her four-year MSU career on the line, Bastel’s putt found its way into the cup, giving the Spartans a total score of 932 in the final round of the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday at Forest Akers West Golf Course. “I can’t believe the putt went in, still - I’m in shock,” Bastel said.

Lansing - The Lugnuts got back on track after a rough road trip, as they closed up a brief four-game homestand with a 6-1 win over the Michigan Battlecats.The Lugnuts (16-17) took three of four games over the Battlecats (20-14), owners of the best record in the East Division of the Midwest League.Before returning to Oldsmobile Park, the Lugnuts sputtered to win four of the previous 12.Lansing struck first Thursday, scoring left fielder and leadoff man Buck Coats in the first inning.

Coach Crean to sing at Wrigley Field

Ex-MSU assistant and current Marquette men’s basketball coach Tom Crean will now be able to say he has something in common with the late Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Carey, Mike Ditka, Muhammad Ali and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. During the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers game at Wrigley Field this afternoon, Crean will lead the crowd in a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” during the seventh inning stretch. For the past five years, the Cubs have had celebrities from all walks of life lead the crowd in singing, a task Carey had before his passing.

Garland interviews for head coach job

Just a week after one piece of the Spartan men’s basketball coaching staff decided to stay put, another assistant soon might be leaving the MSU sidelines.MSU assistant coach Mike Garland will interview for the head coaching job at Wisconsin-Green Bay today, Wisconsin-Green Bay Sports Information Director Brian Nicol said.Garland, a teammate of MSU head coach Tom Izzo at Northern Michigan, has spent six seasons as an assistant on the Spartan bench.
