Ignorance shown at MLK Day celebration

In regard to the person who appeared on stage at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day program (“Emcee’s response was inappropriate,” SN 1/24), it is the view of many that white privilege was invoked at that time, and that little respect was given to King, the audience, the participants and to organizers of the program.

Role change

Although it may be hard to grasp the concept of hockey head coach Ron Mason not being ice-side forever, it’s a fact of life the Spartan family will have to learn to swallow. Mason, 62, will likely step down from his coaching position in June to become MSU’s 16th athletics director.

FBI completes questioning of western-area Michiganians

Police and FBI agents from Western Michigan say they had no problems completing interviews with people of Middle Eastern descent.About 40 men from Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties were interviewed as part of the Department of Justice’s plan to seek information about the terrorist organization, al-Qaida.

Been Taken lacks depth

Youthful music played and energy was everywhere as people piled into the Auditorium’s Arena Theatre on Saturday to see the MSU Department of Theatre’s presentation of “Been Taken.” The theme of re-examining individual expectations seemed interesting enough to draw a crowd of all ages.

Wednesday’s game against Michigan at Breslin Center has been classified as a “White-Out” game. MSU’s athletics department is asking all attending fans to wear white T-shirts in a show of support. Change to small, quick lineup works for Spartans

They may have been smaller, but the players in the Spartans’ new lineup did their job.The women’s basketball team has utilized various lineups all season, but Sunday night’s was arguably its most effective.The Spartans (13-7 overall, 3-6 Big Ten) defeated Northwestern (4-16, 0-9) 75-58.Wildcats head coach June Olkowski was the first to admit the Spartans lineup puzzled her team.“What really gave us problems was the matchup,” Olkowski said.

Defensive surge downs Wildcats

Behind swarming defense and greedy fingers, the Spartan women’s basketball team downed Northwestern 75-58 on Sunday at Breslin Center.Junior forward Syreeta Bromfield’s monster second half broke the game open for the Spartans (13-7 overall, 3-6 Big Ten) and accounted for 15 of her game-high 22 points.Freshman guard Kristin Haynie added 12 points, and freshman forward Joy Johnson chipped in 11.The Spartan defense gave Northwestern (4-16, 0-9) fits all afternoon, forcing the Wildcats into 25 turnovers.

Warm weather draws people outdoors

Students and residents ditched hats and gloves over the weekend for sandals and T-shirts. Temperatures averaged 50 degrees, almost 25 degrees above normal. Education sophomore Sarah Johnson took advantage of the weather by running. “I can’t believe how nice it is.
