SPORTS UPDATE: Coming off major triumph, womens hoops stumbles against conference foe

Something had to give Monday night at Breslin Center when the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Big Ten’s top-scoring team, took on the Spartan women’s basketball team, which boasts the conference’s top defense. And in the final 11 seconds, something gave. Minnesota guard Lindsay Whalen’s drive with just seconds remaining sliced through the Spartan defense and gave the Gophers a 70-69 victory. But for a little more than a half, it didn’t seem like it would even come down to a single shot. Twenty minutes after the opening tip, it appeared the Spartan defense had exhausted Minnesota. The Spartans (10-4, 0-3 Big Ten) took a 37-28 lead into the locker room after trailing early. But, Minnesota (12-2, 2-1) responded in the second half, tightening its defense and converting off Spartan turnovers.

Veteran reporter details harsh truth behind media bias in book

It was bound to happen. The myth of the media’s slant on its news coverage has been talked about and argued about since news coverage was conceived, but nothing has been as “in your face” as the recent book by former CBS correspondent Bernard Goldberg. In his investigation of CBS distorting the news in his 28-year career with the station, Goldberg manages to shock the reader various times with tales of misrepresentation and censorship. In the introduction, Goldberg showed he wasn’t as heartless as he appeared, admitting it was tough to write about people whom he considered his friends during the years.“It’s not easy telling you that Dan Rather, whom I have worked with and genuinely liked for most of my adult life, really is two very different people; and while one Dan is funny and generous, the other is ruthless and unforgiving.

Kmarts future uncertain as stock price sinks

Despite reports of higher than expected sales for the last week of December, financial analysts predicted a grim future for Kmart stock. The emotional tale of a convicted homosexual who committed suicide won’t be told with the approval of the Catholic Diocese. Two weeks ago, the Diocese pulled the plug on plans to allow “Breaking the Code” to be performed at Lansing Catholic Central High School auditorium; it’s a decision that irked the production’s key players. “They canceled the show within four weeks of its opening,” said director Todd Heywood, an openly gay Lansing Community College trustee.

Jim Carrey is cheesy yet satisfying in The Majestic

Everyone’s mom has seen that movie, after which she says, “Oh, it was so good. You have to see it.” If other moms are like mine, those comments have been heard and ignored by me after films like “The Horse Whisperer” or “Bounce.” But “The Majestic” is something every mother, grandmother, and generally any person older than 40 will love. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad, though.

Meridian Mall group should help others

I suspect the students who claimed to be discriminated against when they were kicked out of a Meridian Mall store deciding not to use their quiet voices and best manners were the primary reasons for being asked to leave the mall.
