Use space, color to create style

The days when decorating rooms by plastering posters on the walls, laying down beige carpet and setting out a few family photos are gone. Today’s dorm rooms can be dressed up with psychedelic lights, fuzzy rugs, handmade curtains and artificial flowers. Decorating a room, especially a dorm room, is about mixing creativity, personal taste, space-saving smarts and details to create a comfortable dwelling. “When you decorate your room instead of leaving it plain, you create a happy, warm environment to come home to,” elementary education freshman Andrea Ismirle said.

When the MSU men’s basketball team tangles with Illinois tonight, people will be watching Illini guard Frank Williams. Williams, the 2001 Big Ten Player of the Year, is the Illini’s leading scorer at 16.4 points per game. But lurking in Williams’ shadow is the key to the Illini’s attack, guard Cory Bradford. Many college basketball enthusiasts remember the senior as one of the conference’s best players his freshman and sophomore campaigns, when he averaged just over 15 points a game.

Novel fumbles its attempt at depth

Nothing’s more annoying than reading a book that drudges on like an incohesive mess. Unfortunately, Rachel Solar-Tuttle’s debut novel does exactly that. Solar-Tuttle captures the stereotypical environment of college life.

Dorms not completely worry free

Night reception was originally created as a way to monitor people trying to sneak into residence halls of the opposite sex, MSU night receptionist coordinator Alex Miller said. Now night receptionists’ responsibilities include checking side doors to make sure they aren’t propped open, swiping IDs and signing in guests. But some students say those responsibilities need to be taken more seriously.Doors are sometimes left open, IDs aren’t always needed to get in and students have found ways to beat the system.“We just knock on someone’s window and they open a door,” elementary education sophomore Brian Watkins said.

Use subleasers, plan in advance when skipping town

Not many people are saying, “Won’t you be my neighbor,” nowadays. The cultural emphasis on work and electronic communities has fewer Americans trying to get to know the people who live right next door. East Lansing is no exception. “We talk to the guys by us, but we’re all really busy here,” said engineering arts senior Bryan Piendel, who lives off campus and has never really talked to his neighbors.

RHA representative does his job well

I wanted to commend Timothy Liss on his letter, “SN report didn’t consider all voices” (SN 2/8). I feel Liss has a much better understanding of what the Residence Halls Association as an organization is there for (“to help improve the campus and the lives of the students living on it”) than people like Case Hall RHA Rep.
