In life, we come to discover that we must become self-sufficient in order to make our lives the most effective. We cannot rely on our parents for the rest of our lives — at least most of us can’t — and above all, we cannot count on anything from anyone.

As 7-year-old Cody Funkhouser roasted his marshmallow over an open fire pit, his mom, East Lansing resident Lisa Funkhouser, sat bundled up, enjoying the winter festivities. Lisa Funkhouser said this was her first time attending East Lansing’s Winter Bowl — an event that began about 10 years ago — and she and Cody were enjoying the free activities.

Key faculty left out of meeting on Deaf Ed cuts

An Academic Governance committee reviewed a request to freeze admissions to MSU’s Deaf Education Program on Thursday, leaving one of the program’s directors questioning MSU’s College of Education administrators’ decision to not notify him and other faculty members of the meeting.

A potential arrangement between Wharton Center and the city of Traverse City is expected to be finalized at a city meeting tonight, which would send some of the center’s programming to Traverse City, a city official said.

Spartans split with Wildcats

The No. 11 MSU hockey team returned to CCHA action this weekend in Marquette, earning a split against Northern Michigan. The Wildcats won Saturday’s game at 3:59 of overtime when the puck deflected off an MSU defenseman’s skate and into the Spartans’ net.

MSU's season ends in NCAA tourney

The MSU volleyball team suffered a season-ending loss Friday against No. 13 Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite pushing Kentucky to the brink in the first two sets, the Spartans were unable to finish and fell 3-0 in Lexington, Ky. MSU closed the season with a 17-16 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons.

MSU quickly goes from high to low

In the span of three days, the MSU women’s basketball team went from a game it’ll always remember to one it can’t wait to forget. The Spartans opened Big Ten play against Indiana on Sunday but failed to capture the magic they had against North Carolina, despite head coach Suzy Merchant calling it the team’s most important game to this point.

The MSU men’s basketball team is on the road once again. But instead of playing at North Carolina’s Dean Edwards Smith Center or in Atlantic City, N.J., the Spartans are heading to a small military college for their next challenge.

'We didn't match their intensity'

Although there still are 18 days until Christmas, the MSU women’s basketball team gave Indiana the biggest present it’ll receive this year. Following their big win against North Carolina on Thursday, head coach Suzy Merchant said the No. 22 Spartans played without the same energy, enthusiasm and excitement as they did against the Tar Heels.
