E.L. Food Co-op celebrates reopening Sunday

After hundreds of thousands of dollars in upgrades, the newly remodeled East Lansing Food Co-op, 4960 Northwind Drive, is set to host its official grand reopening Sunday. Starting in late October 2011, the store put about $200,000 of its own money into installing energy-efficient lighting and expanding its fresh food sections and freezer space, General Manager David Finet said.

Column: Wrestling dual outcomes independent of singles success

The one thing MSU wrestling head coach Tom Minkel has been adamant about all season long is that if his wrestlers focus on taking care of their individual matches, the duals will take care of themselves. But unfortunately for Minkel, despite several wrestlers taking care of business, the duals haven’t fallen the way of the Spartans (3-6 overall, 1-4 Big Ten).

Morrall, Gibson to be honored

The Spartan baseball program will honor Earl Morrall as its Alumnus of the Year at the annual First Pitch Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kellogg Center. In addition, former Spartan All-American and current Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson will be on hand for a jersey recognition.

Faculty panel discusses role religion plays in politics

When asked if she believes religion should play a role in politics, psychology junior Erin O’Connor paused. “(Politics) is more than about religion. It’s about your world view,” said O’Connor, co-chair of MSU’s Interfaith Council. “But even if you’re an open-minded person, you’re still going to be influenced by your own religious views.”

By standing out, theatre senior Erika Moul hopes to help others feel as if they fit in. “I love being a part of entertaining people and making people laugh,” Moul said. “I want to make people comfortable with being themselves by being strange.”

Planned casino raises too many questions

On the corner of Michigan Avenue and Cedar Street in downtown Lansing, there could sit a brand- new casino if Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero’s lofty plans go through. Although his plan sounds like an improvement for the city, the chances of success are extremely low.

Renderings unveiled for proposed scoreboards at Spartan Stadium

Some Spartan fans rejoiced Tuesday after renderings of planned Spartan Stadium scoreboards were unveiled. According to MSU Board of Trustees documents, the main scoreboard at the stadium’s south end will be replaced to update its sound system and video display. The back of the board will feature the Spartan helmet.

Lansing area public safety faces changes

Change is afoot in the East Lansing Fire Department. Fire Chief Randall Talifarro is a few days into his position as interim chief for both the Lansing and East Lansing fire departments. Former East Lansing Fire Marshal Bob Pratt said his goodbyes and retired last week, and his position will not be replaced, at least on the interim.

As the elimination of the Michigan Business Tax, or MBT — one of the most touted items by Republicans in this last budget cycle — goes into effect in time for tax season, small businesses in East Lansing are seeing mixed impacts.

Residents gather to discuss bond proposal

About 13 local citizens criticized a bond proposal that would close down a local elementary school during a public meeting held Monday night at the East Lansing Public Library. Some attendees worried about the expense of the bond proposal, which would renovate and reconfigure five of the city’s six elementary schools and put the current site of Red Cedar Elementary School, 1110 Narcissus Drive, to another use.

Chinese students celebrate New Year in East Lansing

Xiao-huang Yin wishes he was born in the Chinese calendar’s Year of the Dragon. “Anyone born in the year of the dragon is considered the best,” said Yin, director of Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities in the Asian Studies Center. “They’re good in marriage, life or basically anything.”
