Minnesota series a reunion for several Spartan hockey players

John Draeger grew up with everyone around him admiring the Minnesota Gophers. The MSU hockey freshman defenseman and Faribault, Minn., native said growing up, “it (was) just the team” everyone followed. And this weekend, Draeger will step onto the Gophers’ ice for the first time, skating in a green and white jersey to try and hand his home-state team an upset loss.

Volleyball returns home for weekend doubleheader

Last time the MSU volleyball team played at home, the Detroit Tigers were in second place in the AL Central, the Spartan football team was in the top 25 and the first presidential debate was still more than a week away. Let’s just say it’s been a while since the Spartans played in front of their home crowd at Jenison Field House.

Republican hopeful Mitt Romney’s campaign was considered to be killed before election day came. A few weeks ago, polls were showing Romney losing to President Barack Obama in key swing states. Plus, Romney’s gaffes, such as the now-infamous “47 percent” comments, substantially hurt his likeability among potential voters.

When professor Robert LaDuca heard about mathematics professor John McCarthy’s public breakdown last week, he knew he had to step into the light and publicly announce a secret that has festered within his private life for more than a decade. In class, LaDuca’s students describe him as upbeat and energetic, but there is a “dark side” to the Lyman Briggs and chemistry professor.

Hackers target MSU web servers

Between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, a group of hackers called Team GhostShell accessed four MSU web servers used for four MSU websites, university spokesman Kent Cassella said in a statement. Team Ghostshell’s mission, called ProjectWestWind, is targeting top-100 universities worldwide, including Harvard University, University of Michigan and Tokyo University, according to the group’s Pastebin.com page.

“Top Gun” screenwriter revisits MSU

“Turner and Hooch,” “Legal Eagles” and “Top Gun” all were top hits in the 1980s starring A-list talent such as Tom Hanks, Robert Redford and Tom Cruise — award-winning hits written by the writing duo of MSU alumni Jack Epps Jr. and Jim Cash.

As Thursday marks National Coming Out Day, the LBGT Resource Center collaborated with campus neighborhood caucuses, student organizations and the LGBT Alumni Association to create an entire week of programs and activities to support the LBGT community during MSU’s National Coming Out Week.
