Maybank to be interim vice president

Senior associate vice president for Student Affairs and Services Denise Maybank will serve as the interim vice president for Student Affairs and Services when current vice president Lee June steps down at the close of the year, President Lou Anna K. Simon announced to the Executive Committee of Academic Council, or ECAC, on Tuesday afternoon.

E.L. community celebrates Chanukah on Ice

Celebrating the sixth night in the Festival of Lights with food, family and ice skating, about 100 people attended Chanukah on Ice at Munn Ice Arena on Monday. Sponsored by the Greater Lansing Jewish Welfare Federation with an unspecified grant from the Ravitz Foundation, the event brought together three Lansing-area Jewish congregations to host and support the evening’s festivities, said Susan Herman, director of the Michigan Jewish Conference and coordinator of the Statewide Jewish Outreach.

Olin, RHA prep students to fight flu

Luke Moreland knows it’s important to stay healthy with finals just around the corner. Officials at Olin Health Center and the Residence Halls Association, or RHA, wish to keep students such as Moreland in mind. The organizations are working together this week to continue their annual effort to distribute cold and flu packs to students living in the residence halls.

Group collects coats, letters at event

On a chilly December afternoon, community members stood in the cold to help collect coats for those who might not have something warm to wrap themselves in during the holiday season and letters for soldiers who won’t be home to celebrate it.

For Muslim students across campus, the new year rings in with reflections of personal growth and prayer instead of noise-makers and kisses at midnight. The local Islamic community is preparing for the Islamic New Year on Tuesday.

Gospel choir sings at church event

Swaying back and forth and clapping their hands in time, members of the MSU Gospel Choir moved to the music they sang Friday evening. The choir was among several groups that performed at Worship 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Worship International Church, 3383 Lake Lansing Road.

Author gives lecture on feminism, meat

After Carol J. Adams’ pony was shot and killed, she had a realization that shaped her life. More than 150 students and community members attended Adams’ Sexual Politics of Meat Slideshow and Lecture Thursday evening in South Kedzie Hall, where Adams spoke of her philosophies.

When Howard Ballein was first hired to work at a bookstore in 1952, he was paid 70 cents per hour. When he opened Student Book Store, or SBS in 1960, books sold for about $6 and the store was 1,800 square feet.
