Student group demonstrates science of audio engineering

In a university with more than 650 student organizations, even students interested in audio can find a place to belong. The Audio Enthusiasts and Engineers group provides students with the opportunity to experiment with working on audio projects, like color organs and six-sided speakers. “Our group’s main goal is to provide an environment for students to learn more about the science side of audio and audio design,” said electrical engineering senior and Audio Enthusiasts and Engineers President Philip Beard.

Tablet usage on rise

According to a study from Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life project, tablet ownership is increasing among Americans 16 and older, rising from 10 to 35 percent over the last 21 months. The tablet market is growing rapidly — the research company Gartner predicted sales to increase more than 53 percent this year. The competition between tablet makers is escalating, and on Tuesday three major technology developers either announced or released new tablets.

South Neighborhood celebrates Brazilian culture with week of events

To spread culture from one nation to another, eight Brazilian exchange students organized a week of activities to share music, food and history with MSU students and faculty members. As part of the Brazil Partnership Program scholarship, exchange student Marina Santos said she and seven others were asked to host a week of events in South Neighborhood to give the MSU community an authentic Brazilian feel.

Pranked students get spooked on M.A.C Avenue

A perceived prank with a $100 bill attached to a string went awry Tuesday night when an unidentified man reportedly jumped out of the bushes near an East Lansing church. A victim told police they noticed a $100 bill on the sidewalk near St. John Church and Student Center, 327 M.A.C. Ave., East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy said.

Optional couples registry now available at City Hall

Starting Wednesday, same-sex couples in East Lansing will be able to join in a symbolic union at City Hall if they wish to do so. The registry is completely optional and open to residents of all municipalities. In order to become a part of the registry, couples must fill out a declaration of domestic partnership form.

Eli Broad College of Business adds new online masters program

The Eli Broad College of Business has launched a new online Master of Science in Management, Strategy and Leadership geared toward professionals who want to work on their management and communication skills, a move college officials hope will bolster leadership capabilities for professionals. The program aims to help students lead others, think strategically and manage human resources, and is geared toward enhancing the skills of mid-level company managers, said Robert Wiseman, Eli Broad legacy fellow of management and chairperson of the Department of Management.

City hosts Avondale Square Housing Fair

Prospective East Lansing homebuyers were provided with an abundance of information on home rehabilitation, financing opportunities, assistance programs for income-qualified households and more at the Avondale Square Housing Fair on Tuesday. East Lansing officials, members of the Hometown Housing Partnership and representatives of Mayberry Homes hosted the event along the 600 block of Virginia Avenue. Representatives from these organizations, along with Summit Bank, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Center for Financial Health were gathered under a white tent on-location in an attempt to sell available homes in the development.

Iraqi dance group dazzles MSU

First Step Iraq, a group comprised of dancers and rappers all from Baghdad, Basra, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, brought their hip-hop style to Erickson Hall Kiva on Tuesday evening. The performance, “From Iraq with Hip Hop,” was part of their “Hiplomacy” tour for the month of October, which includes stops in New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Two MSU students chosen for White House internships

MSU is set to have a presence in the White House with the announcement that two students were selected for the fall 2013 session of the White House Internship Program. Megan Havern of Armada, Mich., and Vikram Mandelia of Southfield were selected to fill two of the 145 fall internship positions.

Recycling Center to host numerous events this week

As part of Campus Sustainability Week, the MSU Recycling Center hosted an open house that featured a composting and organic food presentation to teach students and staff more about organic farming. The open house served as an opportunity for students to learn about the positives of composting and the differences between organic and non-organic food options.

Oswald Scott Wilder pretrial moved to Oct. 28

The pretrial of Vernon, Mich resident Oswald Scott Wilder has been moved to 2 p.m. Oct. 28 in Ingham County Circuit Court. Wilder, 26, confessed to sexually assaulting four MSU students in East Lansing earlier this year. He was arrested in August and faced the testimony of all four victims last month in 54-B District Court.

Impact 89FM doesn't win top college radio station award

Impact 89FM has been known as one of the top college radio stations in the country, but will not own the official title this year, falling short of the ranking of top college radio station in the country last Thursday. The station was nominated for the 2013 College Radio Station of the Year Award from the College Music Journal, the top North American journal for college radio.

MSU Outdoors Club frequents Grand Ledge to go rock climbing

Mid-Michigan is not necessarily well-known for its topography, but members of the MSU Outdoors Club often travel to the nearby town of Grand Ledge to scale one of the only natural rock climbing areas in the Lower Peninsula. Known as the “ledges,” the slope sits on the banks of the Grand River and is frequented by rock climbers in the summer.
