Response to ban varied

A policy implemented Tuesday by Lansing Community College designed to stop smoking on campus was greeted with a mixed reaction from students and staff. The policy follows a train of LCC non smoking measures that began with a smoking restriction inside campus buildings in 2000, said college spokeswoman Ruth Borger. The new measure restricts smoking on the sidewalks and grounds of the campus, excluding public sidewalks and areas not owned by the college.

Car wash planned

The East Lansing High School bands and orchestras will hold its 13th annual fund-raiser car wash Saturday at MacDonald Middle School, 1601 Burcham Drive.The car wash is the band’s largest fund-raising event of the year.

Road work ongoing

Motorists who wish to travel on South Harrison Avenue must find alternate routes for the next two weeks.South Harrison Avenue, between Trowbridge Road and Mount Hope Road, are closed to repair the railroad crossings of Canadian National Railroad and CSX Railroad.Traffic will be detoured around the construction area through Mount Hope Road, Farm Lane, Wilson and Trowbridge roads.

Lansing - Diana Lopez strolled through the Cristo Rey Parish Church basement, hugging friends as she chatted in smooth transitions from Spanish to English. Lopez, a health program assistant for the Ingham County Health Department, helped with translation at the Annual Hispanic Health Fair on Saturday at the 201 W.

E.L. to explore international program

East Lansing Public Schools has joined with MSU to investigate the possibility of bringing an international twist to an elementary school via an International Baccalaureate primary program. The program stresses a multicultural education within an elementary school environment.

Coordinator to council: Drinking on decline

An MSU health coordinator says alcohol use among students has decreased from previous years.Jasmine Greenamyer, health education coordinator for Olin Health Center, said an MSU study showed 25 percent of MSU students have not drank in the last month and 66 percent of students consumed five or fewer alcoholic beverages the last time they drank.

U hosts reps from Michigan universities

MSU’s undergraduate student government hosted delegates from each of Michigan’s 15 public universities Saturday to discuss higher education issues in the state.The Association of Michigan Universities goal was to speak and act on behalf of college students.
