Letter failed to discredit column

Stephen Bouren’s arguments (“Men should not take all blame,” SN 10/18) in response to Jessi Phillips’ recent column (“Women should think twice about marriage,” 10/16) fell short of disproving Phillips’ claims about the division of labor in the average American marriage. “Loving fathers everywhere” can rest assured that when Phillips states, “Most men do not share equal responsibility when it comes to taking care of their children,” she is not questioning their affections, but rather stating a fact.

The MSU men’s soccer team upset No. 15 Penn State 2-0 Sunday, playing short a player in final 20 minutes of the game because of a red card.After receiving a yellow card early in the second half, senior midfielder Pat Mahoney was handed his second yellow card later in the second half, resulting in the red card.MSU assistant coach Damon Rensing said the team accepted the challenge in the final 20 minutes.

Skatefest raises funds for local skate parks

LANSING - Skateboarders, in-line skaters, heavy metal bands and community members gathered Saturday and Sunday to help raise money for a Lansing area skate park.The event, Skatefest 2000, was held in a city parking lot on the corners of Kalamazoo and Cedar streets in Lansing.All the money was raised through the sale of food, T-shirts and other merchandise at the event.

School vouchers lack voter support

Dave Houston is looking forward to voting no on Proposal 1.Houston, a father of two children in the East Lansing School District, said the Michigan voucher proposal is too radical to pass, and he believes it will inevitably take money away from public school districts and hurt education in Michigan.“The proponents’ ads have been misleading,” Houston said.

I am writing in response to a State News article (“Proposed bill suggests new keg regulations,” SN 10/18). I’m glad that our elected officials have nothing better to do than try and regulate the weekend activities of college students.

The passage of Proposal 1 would be the beginning of a downward spiral in the fate of public schools.Voters should soundly reject it.Proposal 1 would repeal a 1970 constitutional amendment outlawing public funding of religious schools.

Cleaves, Smith start in return to Breslin floor

Mateen Cleaves only scored three points on Thursday night, but that didn’t dampen the spirit of Spartan fans eager to welcome their favorite son back to town.Cleaves and Antonio Smith, another former Spartan, returned to the Breslin Student Events Center to start for their new team, the Detroit Pistons, during an NBA exhibition game against the Utah Jazz.Forward Jerome Williams nailed four free throws in the final minute as the Pistons held on to win 98-94 after blowing an 18-point fourth-quarter lead.Right from the opening tip, Cleaves and Smith were faced with the formidable challenge of matching up against two of the league’s premier players.
