University Committee on Student Affairs and ASMSU should be commended for its involvement in creating a new riot policy, which should be adopted by the university as soon as possible.The existing policy, established after the March 27-28, 1999, riot, allows university officials to punish students who partake in any uprising, whether it be on campus or off.

Freshmen scammed by fake salesperson

Amanda Smith is a little more skeptical than she used to be.Especially of those who approach the door to her dorm room with what could be perceived as a good deal.Smith, a Spanish freshman, and her roommate were bamboozled out of about $180 last month after purchasing several magazines from a man who said he was an MSU communication student collecting points to win an overseas trip to Australia.“In hindsight I guess it made sense (that it was a scam),” Smith said.

Michael Wilder has visited at least four haunted houses every year since he was 10. A decade later, the pre-law and finance sophomore still gets scared while going through “haunted” buildings. “They get you all the time,” Wilder said.

Duckett may not see weekend action

Because of a sprained shoulder, sophomore tailback T.J. Duckett may not play against Illinois this weekend.Head coach Bobby Williams said Monday that Duckett’s playing status being evaluated.“I’m not sure if he’s going to be ready for this weekend,” he said.

Sludge-caked bikes, browned but previously white plastic lawn chairs, a soggy mattress and a rusted bed frame were just a few of the pollutants pulled from the Red Cedar River muck earlier this month by environmentally-conscious MSU students. And Wednesday afternoon, the items were showcased.

A handful of students stood at the rock on Farm Lane on Wednesday night, shielding their white candles from the wind.Voices for Choices, a political awareness student organization, held a candlelight vigil to honor Abortion Access Action Month, which is celebrated in October.

Greeks have fun preparing kids for Halloween

Students from Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity volunteered Tuesday to carve pumpkins with local elementary school students.The event at Red Cedar Elementary School, 1110 Narcissus St., was one of several activities local greek chapters plan to do with area children.“It’s important to go out in the community and spend time with kids,” said Genevieve Webb, philanthropy chair for Kappa Alpha Theta.

E.L. watches housing issue

East Lansing officials have a simple message for students who live with more than the licensed number of people in a house.“Students who live in overoccupied houses do so for reasons like money or ‘everyone else does it so we won’t get caught,’” East Lansing Housing Code Analyst Harriett Ferrigno said.
