Students looking to get an ASMSU loan may wind up disappointed - at least for a while.The undergraduate student government currently does not have any full-time employees to oversee its business office operations, causing trouble for those who come seeking the $100 loans ASMSU provides.“It’s particularly frustrating when you have bills to pay and you depend on ASMSU to be there,” said Laura Utter, an English senior who stopped by the business office at 3 p.m.

Michigan misses out on tobacco money

Michigan is one of 14 states yet to receive the full tobacco settlement.A dispute in the tobacco settlement - which doles out $206 billion during the next 25 years and prevents tobacco companies from advertising on billboards and targeting children with marketing tactics - is causing Michigan to wait for some $14 million.Total money being withheld from the states adds up to almost $200 million.Tobacco companies claim the states failed to pass a law preventing nonparticipating tobacco companies from benefiting from the settlement.“We did pass the law, but we didn’t have the enforcement mechanism in place in 1999,” said Kelly Chesney, a spokeswoman for the state budget office.

Cigarettes are a choice, not morality issue

I am a smoker. I really like cigarettes. I smoke around a pack of them every day. I have smoked through respiratory infections, family dysfunction, hellish work days, romantic woes and term papers. I buy cigarettes in cartons. One of my hobbies is collecting cigarettes from every state - the tax stamp on the bottom of the packs differs from state to state. I have no intention of quitting any time soon.

Seniors rack up 100th career victory at home

There’s no place like home for MSU basketball.The Spartans extended Division I basketball’s longest home winning streak to 38 games Wednesday night with their 84-53 win over Northwestern.Fans are becoming accustomed to blowouts at Breslin Student Events Center.The win marked the 100th win for the senior class.
