Students spend break on Sioux reservation

MISSION, S.D. - Chief Albert Whitehat of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota said the nature of human beings can be simply put: “Every creation has the power to build or destroy.” And a group of 24 MSU students chose to build - traveling nearly 1,000 miles to spend their spring breaks forging relationships on Whitehat’s reservation. Their seven-day voyage was one of several Alternative Spring Break trips coordinated through MSU, each one dealing with social issues such as hunger, homelessness and AIDS.

Napster forced to block thousands of songs from service this week

In another bold move against Napster, the Recording Industry Association of America sent a list of 135,000 copywritten songs currently available on Napster to the free online music trading service Friday night. Napster has until Wednesday to block its file-swapping service of those songs. The list was compiled of music owned by the five biggest record labels - Sony, Warner, BMG, EMI and Universal - which all believe Napster is robbing them of billions in profits. Shortly after the announcement, Napster issued a statement that assured its more than 60 million users they will still be able to use the system - with some limitations. “You will still be able to share music that we haven’t been asked to block,” the statement read.

U maintenance cleans grounds during break

While MSU students were away, the grounds crew definitely did not play.Gary Parrott, MSU Grounds Maintenance manager, said although the absence of students did not increase workloads, grounds crews had their hands full during spring break week.“The crews do have work to do,” he said.

ASMSU proposes cutting sweatshop ties

In response to concerns voiced by Students for Economic Justice and other MSU students, ASMSU is considering a measure this week asking the MSU Board of Trustees to cut ties with the Fair Labor Association, and join the Worker Rights Consortium.“The fact of the matter is that students want Michigan State to join the WRC,” said Matt Weingarden, the Council of Students With Disabilities representative for the ASMSU Student Assembly.

Local theater features childrens production

All-of-Us Express Children’s Theatre presented “Gareth, the Gentle Gargoyle” at The Riverwalk Theatre for the musical’s opening run this weekend, and attracted scores of families to the near-sold out production. Spartans complete sweep of Alaska-Fairbanks

It took a little longer than expected, but top-ranked MSU eventually provided a grand finale for a crowd of 6,329 at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday night.The Spartans (30-4-4), playing at Munn for the last time this season, completed their first-round CCHA playoff sweep by topping Alaska-Fairbanks 3-2 in overtime.Senior left wing Sean Patchell slipped a puck through Nanook goaltender Lance Mayes’ legs 7:18 into the extra frame for the game-winner.“As if I didn’t have enough memories already,” Patchell said of his MSU career.
