SPORTS UPDATE: Womens basketball tops Nittany Lions, 66-62

Led by timely defense and their ability to keep composure at the line, the Spartans downed the Nittany Lions 66-62 Sunday at Breslin Center.Freshman guard Kristin Haynie scored the Spartans last three-points from the free-throw line, while the MSU defense sealed the win by closing down Penn State’s chance at a shot in the closing seconds.Junior forward Syreeta Bromfield led all scorers with 18 points and added seven rebounds and two steals to the winning cause.Nittany Lions guard Tanisha Wright ended the game with 16 points and nine rebounds.The Spartans were able to limit guard Kelly Mazzante to just nine points on 3-17 shooting during the win.

SPORTS UPDATE: Spartans topple Penn State in first road win

State College, Penn. - The MSU men’s basketball team finally won a game outside the friendly confines of Breslin Center. MSU (11-7 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) lost six-straight games away from home before it beat Penn State, 77-65, Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center. “That was a huge win,” freshman guard Chris Hill said.

Students attempt to bring NAACP to campus

A group of MSU students are attempting to give a national organization new life on campus. A committee of five students are in the process of making MSU a part of the Youth and College Division of the NAACP and a registered student organization. “We are trying to rebuild ourselves and become a force on campus,” acting president and biochemistry sophomore Quiana Ruffinsaid. According to the Student Life Center, the last time the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was registered on campus was the spring semester of 1999. But after students discussed the Meridian Mall incident at a Hubbard Hall government meeting, the effort to bring the NAACP back to campus began. On Oct.

Spartans trounce Buckeyes in Big Ten win

Columbus, Ohio - The Spartan women’s basketball team did something Thursday it hasn’t done all year - leave the floor with a win against a Big Ten foe. The Spartans (11-6 overall, 1-5 Big Ten) broke into the win column in conference play with a 64-49 win over Ohio State. Maintaining the lead from start to finish, MSU dominated the Buckeyes (9-9, 4-3). Leading the way for the Spartans was freshman center Kelli Roehrig with 18 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Vnemina Reese contributed on both ends, recording four steals in the first half and scoring seven of her nine points in the second half. “It was really crucial for us to play well in the second half, because that’s where we have had trouble,” she said.

U could see 5 percent cut

MSU could face as much as a 5-percent cut in state funding for the 2002-03 fiscal year, causing state lawmakers and university officials to predict greater tuition increases for the land-grant university. “The worst-case scenario would be a cut in the state appropriation of between 3 and 5 percent,” state Sen.

Agriculture research gets $2.8 million

Dairy cows experience stress like the average person - and MSU agriculture researchers were able to milk $2.8 million from the Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems to study the effects of stress on farmers’ bovines at the genetic level.“We’ve identified over 18,000 unique genes in cattle and we have those on hand right now,” said Paul Coussens, director of the MSU Center for Animal Functional Genomics. Coussens is the primary investigator in the set of studies.

Some MSU students refuse to rest and relax until they get a fall break from school. The University of Michigan Board of Regents decided in December students will get a two-day fall break during October.

Professor to discuss reggaeReggae music will be the focus of a lecture presented by James Madison College and the Department of Political Science. Harvard University sociology Professor Orlando Patterson grew up in Jamaica and is familiar with the music’s impact on Jamaican culture. A grant MSU received in 2001 from the Freedom Project is funding Patterson’s visit.
