GEU honored by labor organization for successful formation of union

One of the nation’s largest supporters of labor unions honored MSU’s Graduate Employees Union at its convention this week.The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations invited the GEU to be involved with its convention in Las Vegas because of the group’s campaign to form a union, which ended successfully in May.Peter Cunningham, an anthropology graduate student and member of the GEU’s steering committee, was chosen to attend the conference.“The AFLCIO wanted to highlight recent organizing campaigns,” he said.

Recruits hyped about bowl, watch postseason practice

A trip to the Dec. 31 Silicon Valley Football Classic in San Jose, Calif., may cost MSU hundreds of thousands of dollars, but the return on that investment could be the signing of some highly sought after recruits. Recruits are allowed to watch the team’s practice for a bowl game and see the team play on national TV, said Bill Kurelic, a recruiting expert from Midwest Recruiting.

Old Newsboys continue charitable work in Lansing

Lansing - Mayor David Hollister came down from his 10th floor office Wednesday to buy a paper from an Old Newsboy. Since 1924, the Old Newsboys Newspaper has been raising money to buy footwear for needy schoolchildren by selling newspapers with spoof news stories about people in the public eye. The paper is printed and written by the Lansing State Journal. On Friday, more than 400 Old Newsboys sales people will be stationed throughout the city selling the papers. Tom Shiels has been with the organization since 1968 and was a past president. He said the tradition began in 1910, when truancy officer George Palmer, noticed many children were not attending school in winter because they had no shoes to wear.

Slater to play on U.S. Junior team

MSU freshman center Jim Slater, a Lapeer native, will play for the United States at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic later this month. Consequently, MSU’s scoring leader will miss the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec.

Ishbia upgraded from walk-on to active

The holidays came a little early for senior guard Mat Ishbia this year.The 5-foot-10, 175-pound walk-on’s status shifted just before the season when men’s head basketball coach Tom Izzo gave him a scholarship.Ishbia said he didn’t see it coming.“It was a great honor,” Ishbia said.

GEU grade-in fills lobby with people, paperwork

Workers and visitors to the Administration Building on Wednesday had a hard time keeping their balance while stepping around the busy people and stacks of papers covering the floor in the lobby. They’ll have to struggle not to trip today as well. The Graduate Employees Union held a “grade-in” Wednesday and will have another today.

Band should enjoy bowl game berth

I think it is a shame the band may not travel to California with the team. The school needs to get off the money, the band is a big part of that team and supports the players no matter what. The team needs to stand up for the band.

Swistak earns Olympic torch nod

Joining the likes of athletic heroes Muhammad Ali, Willie Mays and Steve Young, MSU hockey player Steve Swistak will be one of 11,500 Olympic torchbearers carrying the flame across the country en route to February’s Winter Games in Salt Lake City.Swistak, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman, will run with the torch for one-fifth of a mile near his hometown of West Bloomfield on Jan.

Powerful new worm seeks to infect U, anti-virus company experts say

Anti-virus companies reported Tuesday that the “goner” virus was making its way into computers around the world - including MSU’s campus. The worm arrives through an e-mail message with the subject line “Hi” and carries an attachment called “goner.scr,” in an attempt to fool users into believing they are being sent a screen saver. The message body reads, “How are you?

Women cagers finish off Oakland

The MSU women’s basketball team reinforced the cliché “it’s not how you start, but how you finish,” Wednesday night at Breslin Center. Two late scoring surges to close out each half proved to be the difference, as the Spartans (7-1) rallied from eight points down to defeat the Oakland Grizzlies 55-53. “This was a very defensive basketball game,” head coach Joanne P.

Annual enrollment plagues students with full classes

As most MSU students are planning for finals, some are struggling to fill out schedules for January’s classes.Students attempting to add or switch classes are often faced with classes that were full since last spring’s enrollment period.Maegan Daughtery said she is checking daily to see if a spot will open in BS 110, Organisms and Populations, before classes start Jan.

Alternative couples gain benefits but not vows

A vote by the Detroit City Council will benefit gay and lesbian couples who are city employees - they are now able to register someone as their domestic partner.By a 7-2 vote, the city council approved a measure Friday which grants partner rights to alternative couples who are city employees.
