SN biased against Republican board

Last week, I read an editorial that said Gov. John Engler is sabotaging the Board of Trustees by removing a Democratic member through an appointment to the bench (“Engler games,” SN 2/1). For some reason, the blame was on Engler for making a nonpartisan decision to give someone a chance to realize a dream that very few have a chance to do.

Stereotype contains factual information

Regarding your article “Group protests depiction on flier” (SN 2/7), the complaints about the advertisement for “Kung Pow: Enter the Fist” seem to be the ad is discriminatory against Asian Americans because it 1) refers to consumption of dog meat, and 2) contains exaggerated physical features.

MIDDAY UPDATE: New apartment complexes luring students from downtown with furnishings, extra amenities

Sunlight peering through the windows cast shadows on the furniture in the apartment Jennifer Webb and Kierra Tandy were touring.After signing a lease for the fall semester, the two MSU students wanted to see what an apartment completely furnished looked like at Capstone Commons apartments, 2501 Abbott Road.“Its not far, it took us five minutes to get here, and we have been staying on campus for two years,” said Webb, a medical technician sophomore.“It was a real quick decision.”New apartment complexes that offer pre-furnished rooms, club houses and workout areas have become a popular choice for some students.Since 1999 three apartment complexes have come into the area, many offering similar amenities.But the properties have also become hefty competition for landlords with homes and older apartment complexes closer to campus.

In a unique contract among patient advocate groups, employers and insurance companies, a coalition agreed Wednesday to cover routine patient costs associated with cancer clinical trials. Clinical trials are experiments and studies involving people that test new cancer drugs and study the effectiveness of existing treatments.

Student governments end association

Ann Arbor - The undergraduate student governments of the Big Ten voted to dissolve their organization and replace it with a biannual meeting Sunday at the University of Michigan. ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, was the only school that voted to keep the Associated Students of the Big Ten.

Children create crafts at museum

Newspapers lined the floor of Kresge Art Museum as children of all ages gathered around glitter-covered tables to use child-proof scissors and colored paper to make valentines for someone they love.“A Celebration of Heart” took place Sunday afternoon and gave students and families a chance to interact as they hand-crafted valentines and puppets.Participating in the puppet-making workshop conducted by Carol Lacca, Madeline Booth, 7, looked up to her father for guidance.“Daddy, I can’t figure out how to get her hair on,” she said.Phil Booth, a Williamston resident, reached down to assist his daughter.

Training center to be built in Delta Township

Lansing - The Lansing Community College Board of Trustees finalized its application Friday to place a new training facility in Delta Township. The $6.9 million Michigan Technical Education Center and $16.7 million training center will train workers for General Motors Corp., its suppliers and other high-tech manufacturers.

Contest rewards responsible recycling

Lansing - Two weeks ago, Lansing resident John Kanillopoolos didn’t have any extra trash bags to lend to his friend, but now he has more than enough money to buy some extras. Kanillopoolos was the latest winner of the Lansing Recycler of the Week contest, a program started two years ago by the operations and maintenance division of the city’s Public Service Department. Winners have an option of choosing a $100 cash prize or 75 green city trash bags, worth $125.

The 19th annual Pow-Wow of Love took place Saturday and Sunday at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education.
