Council may fill vacant seat with election

Lansing City Council will fill a vacant council seat, left by Lou Adado, by May 13.Adado announced his resignation Monday because of the distraction from recent sexual harassment allegations.Three bids have been filed with the city clerk since his decision.Two city employees have accused Adado of the charges.Heather Eman and an unnamed woman have said Adado touched them inappropriately.The council has 30 days after Monday, when they vote to accept Adado’s resignation, to find a replacement.Under the city’s charter, the council must accept any resignation in a formal meeting.“We have been elected to do a job and sometimes that job is not easy,” Councilmember Geneva Smith said.City officials will begin interviewing applicants May 6 for the open position.

$93 million science building opens

Wolfgang Bauer has been a busy man this week.The chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, along with countless other faculty and staff, have been preparing for today’s opening of the new Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building.Workers were in the $93 million facility Thursday making final preparations for the dedication ceremony, to be held at 3:30 p.m.

Contest offers to fly in graduation guest

Brent Biebuyck desperately wants his girlfriend Laura to see him graduate this May. But like many college couples, lack of money and limited transportation could prevent the communication senior’s girlfriend from making the journey from her home in Ottawa, Canada to East Lansing. But WDBM (88.9 FM) may have a solution to his travel woes - the first “Bring Your Granny to Graduation” contest.

Jason Wagner, a theater senior and a the Tribe, a band of hippies in the play, said this production is outstanding and allows the cast to be as free spirited as possible. “It you want to see a musical that has something to offer,” Wagner said, “this musical has something to offer.” At the beginning of the show, a pack of tribal hippies dance and sing odes to sex and love, marijuana and peace.

Ladyfest kicks off today in Lansing

In mid-August last year, Lansing residents Sarah Stollak and Latricia Horstman traveled to Chicago for Ladyfest Midwest 2001, an event celebrating women in music and the arts. Almost immediately after their return to Lansing, they began planning for Ladyfest Lansing 2002, which will be held today through Sunday at various venues in Lansing’s Old Town. “The first thing we thought was that Detroit should totally do a Ladyfest, but the more I thought about it I was like ‘Lansing needs to do a Ladyfest, not Detroit,’” Stollak said.

ASMSU’s Academic Assembly voted Tuesday not to support the Graduate Employees Union’s request for increased wages and benefits.Thirteen out of 15 undergraduate student government members voted against supporting the union, which is seeking higher wages to cover the cost of living and health care benefits.

U works to lead in preventing alcohol abuse

In response to a study showing 1,400 college students are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents, university officials say MSU is ahead of the game in using strategies to combat alcohol abuse.“I think we’re ahead with the recommendations and programs we’re currently doing,” Olin Health Educator Jasmine Greenamyer said.

Safer drinking

It’s too early to tell if sending the message to drink responsibly has been working enough to lower alcohol-related accidents, but it’s also too soon to give up trying to promote it. A study released Tuesday by the Task Force on College Drinking, showed 1,400 college students are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents.
