Costume can change wearer's mentality

Halloween is the perfect time to try something new, whether it be a piece of candy, a crazy outfit, or, in some cases, a personality. “I feel more confident in any dress-up situation, even on a regular going-out night, not just on Halloween,” said Erin Cooney, an interior design junior. “When you have something out of the norm for you, it’s easier to be more forward.”

Greeks go green, recycle

Almost 3,000 plastic bottles. More than 200 pounds of newspaper. Almost 100 magazines and more than 550 cans and bottles. These numbers reflect the amount of recyclable materials left scattered about lawns, on front porches and crushed into the sidewalks around East Lansing and MSU last week.

COMMENTARY

Redistribution not a good policy for class grades, U.S. economy

I wonder how many students would be interested in grade “redistribution.” Suppose every 4.0 grade in a class was converted to a 3.0 grade so as to redistribute one grade point to students failing the course, in order to allow those students to pass or be given to students who have grades they deserved — but grades that are lower than what those students want. Does that seem fair?

Regulation, education needed for caffeine intake

Red Bull “gives you wings.” Who wouldn’t enjoy a pair of flapping wings to help you get around campus? Well, a side effect of those wings could be anxiety, insomnia, tremors and a rapid heart rate as a result of the caffeine in energy drinks. These effects, also known as caffeine intoxication, have led to a petition for the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the amount of caffeine in energy drinks.

BASKETBALL

Freshmen looking to make immediate impact for Spartans

It wasn’t anything personal, but in all honesty, Porschè Poole didn’t like Courtney Schiffauer in high school. That’s how it went in Ohio’s Federal League Conference when Poole, a 5-foot-8 guard at McKinley High School, constantly battled Boardman High School and Schiffauer, Boardman’s standout 6-foot-1 forward throughout their high school years.

COMMENTARY

Hopeful optimism can cause letdown

Odds are that on Nov. 5 the American political landscape will be dramatically changed — at least for the short term. Although it can’t be guaranteed that we’ll know for certain who our next president will be — thank you, 2000 presidential election, for that uncertainty — any result will have major ramifications in the political sphere.

Delia Koo, for whom the MSU International Academic Center is named, died last week at the age of 87. She first made her appearance at MSU by donating $3 million to the university to assist international students in 2000.

SPORTS

Hoyer's skills take MSU to 35-21 win over in-state rival

With seven yards to the end zone, three minutes on the clock and the weight of a state’s expectations on his shoulders Saturday against Michigan, the call came in for Brian Hoyer to throw the ball on third-and-a-career. U-M, the down-and-out rival trailing by a touchdown in the defining game of its season, needed one stop to force a field goal.

General fund covers tuition increase

After receiving lower than expected appropriations from the state this year, the MSU Board of Trustees voted Friday to increase tuition for spring semester. Tuition will increase 1.2 percent in the spring, but students won’t notice a difference on their bills until the summer semester. MSU will cover the tuition increase in the spring with money from its general fund.

FOOTBALL

All grown up

After MSU’s 35-21 victory over Michigan on Saturday, Brian Hoyer and Javon Ringer entered the postgame media room, a square cement area under Michigan Stadium. The room was filled with cameras, media members and a table with three chairs set up under the only decoration in the room: a black, vinyl covering with the U-M block “M” and Big Ten Network logos scattered all over it. “Take it down!” said someone in the media.

Police name suspect, keep leads open in murder case

The four-week investigation of a Wright Township quadruple homicide involving an MSU student has turned a corner, but is far from being finished, Ottawa County sheriff’s Lt. Mark Bennett said. Troy Brake, a 31-year-old Grant man, was officially named a suspect Friday in the murder of Katherine A. Brown, 18, an agribusiness sophomore, and three others.

SOCCER

Spartans tie Jackrabbits 1-1

The MSU women’s soccer team had never lost a home game or gone into overtime at any point during the season. After hosting South Dakota State on Sunday, only half of that statement still holds true.

SOCCER

Goalkeepers stellar in 0-0 deadlock

Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Steinlage stopped six shots and recorded his third straight shutout Sunday at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field. But the Spartans offense couldn’t find the back of the net to earn the victory against Valparaiso, and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
