FOOTBALL

Win the trenches

Be it rushing or protecting the quarterback, MSU’s offensive and defensive lines were pass-happy against Iowa. With the ball in their hands, the Spartans’ offensive line has given up two sacks through six games, one of which came Saturday when Iowa defensive tackle Mitch King brought MSU senior quarterback Brian Hoyer down in the third quarter.

Stadium dedicated in pregame ceremony

When MSU alumnus Doug DeMartin sat back and wondered where a donation would best suit MSU’s athletic needs, he turned his head to the soccer field. He noticed the caliber of Spartans soccer and the space they competed on were at complete opposite ends of the spectrum — the playing field not doing the Green and White justice as to how great of a program they’ve always been and what they strive to be.

SOCCER

Spartans win 1-0 on late penalty kick

As the game went on, the intensity only escalated — higher and higher every second. Bodies thrown to the field, whistles blowing, cards being raised and the clock only stopping for minor injuries.

Comley learns more about team during intrasquad scrimmage

During the MSU hockey team’s annual Green and White game, both teams got a little taste of victory. After two 25-minute periods, the White team prevailed 5-1, but the Green team won the practice shootout afterward. MSU head coach Rick Comley saw progress on both sides of the puck in the team’s first time playing a game together.

MSU Graduate School reports fewer doctoral degrees awarded

Though there has been a reported growth in the number of doctoral degrees conferred between 2006 and 2007 by U.S. graduate schools, the numbers at MSU show there hasn’t been such an increase in East Lansing. A survey released by the Council of Graduate Schools, or CGS, shows the number of doctorates given by U.S. graduate schools increased by 9 percent between 2006 and 2007 compared with an average annual growth of 2 percent during the past decade.

Dino Dash raises funds for MSU Museum

After 23 years, Joyce Banish hasn’t grown tired of watching people run in circles. The vice president of marketing at the MSU Federal Credit Union loves this year’s Dinosaur Dash 5K just as much as the very first one. Banish joined with thousands of others Sunday at the MSU Museum for the MSU Federal Credit Union Dinosaur Dash.

COMMENTARY

Candidates fail to mention Palestine

Thursday night’s vice presidential debate was relatively standard fare, and came surely as a disappointment to those hoping to see Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin melt down. Each candidate clung tightly to his or her respective party lines and delivered talking points fluidly and forcefully.

COMMENTARY

Pulling out of Mich. could hurt Republican voters

For many Michigan Republicans, the smell of betrayal hangs in the air. Thursday, just as Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama came to MSU’s campus, Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign announced it was pulling its advertising and operatives out of Michigan — in effect conceding the state to Obama.

FOOTBALL

Spartans slip past Hawkeyes

After nearly 58 minutes of grind-it-out, pound-it-home football Saturday, Iowa turned the game against MSU into a game of inches. Trailing the Spartans 16-13 with 2:13 remaining, the Hawkeyes faced a fourth-and-inches situation at MSU’s 20-yard line. Instead of attempting a 37-yard field goal for the tie, Iowa opted to keep its offense on the field and go for the first down. Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi handed the ball to 5-foot-11, 235 bruising running back Shonn Greene, who ran to his left in search of an opening.

HOLT – The cheers of, “Go Green, Go White!” and, “Move that bus!” were almost interchangeable Friday as the Nickless family finally had their new home unveiled by the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” crew. There was a large MSU presence on Eifert Road, with appearances by MSU cheerleaders, volunteers who worked on the site throughout the week and of course, Sparty.

Obama's MSU debut

Standing before an estimated 20,000-person crowd that would have overfilled Breslin Center by 3,720 people, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama received a Spartans basketball jersey with his name and the number “08” on the back Thursday afternoon.
