It could have been worse. Although the Republican Party lost the presidency to President-elect Barack Obama and the Democratic Party gained significant leads in the Senate and House of Representatives, experts said the Republican Party fared better than expected.

EPA takes lead in air quality protection

When the Environmental Protection Agency says “get the lead out,” they mean it. A little more than two weeks ago, the EPA cut the amount of lead emissions allowed in the air by 90 percent, from 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter of air (ug/m3) to .15 ug/m3, according to a statement from the EPA.

I have found the letter by Robin Moore, Ranking system of girls at parties degrading, kills fun, about Alpha Epsilon Pi’s Halloween party; Erin Miller’s letter that stuck up for sexual self-expression, Halloween not just an excuse to roam streets scantily-clad ; and finally Catherine Fish’s column, Judging girls on wardrobe wrong, examining inter-female wardrobe judgment collectively to be educational on some women’s views of modesty, intimacy, and sexuality and their effects.

Passage of proposal 8 sets back gay rights movement

Tuesday was a great day for many Americans. The announcement of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill, becoming our next president was both historic and inspiring on many counts, a bold statement that our nation has come a long way since the discriminative days of our past. However, with the passage of Proposition 8 in California, as well as other discriminatory measures being passed in Florida, Arizona and Arkansas, I wonder if we’ve really moved forward at all.

City clerk: E.L. had 65 percent voter turnout

Students who were gathered at the polls by 7 a.m. on Election Day had taken East Lansing City Clerk Nicole Evans’ advice: Get to the polls early to avoid the peak hours. “Students heard the call about off-peak hours being at 7 a.m. — so they all showed up at 7 a.m. and created a new peak time,” she said, laughing.
