Spartans lose, remain winless in Big Ten

Both the MSU men’s soccer team and its opponent, Wisconsin, were searching for their first conference victory Sunday afternoon in Madison, Wisc. After playing to a 1-1 deadlock through regulation, it appeared the game would go down in the books as a tie.

Music, youth join to support green jobs

They spoke their message. They rallied their message. They chanted, volunteered, wore, drew and sang their message. From Oct. 9-11, 400 high school and college students gathered together for Power Shift Michigan 2009 at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing. The conference included workshops, keynote speakers, volunteer service projects around Lansing, musical performances and a fashion show, and finished Sunday with a march to the Capitol Building.

Spartans post nonconference shutout

The No. 8 MSU field hockey team avoided a home letdown Sunday, playing just well enough to defeat Central Michigan, 2-0, despite not having its strongest outing. The Spartans had several chances to put the Chippewas away early after scoring a goal less than four minutes into the game. But Central Michigan hung tough and didn’t relent even after the Spartans scored both goals by the early stages of the second half.

Freshman tells of dirty living, letting loose

Living away from the parental-unit is the ultimate perk of college life and is symbolized by nothing other than the freshman dorm. It’s a magical place where things such as hygiene and sleep do not exist and anything you want can be microwaved at any time of the night. Things like school and homework don’t restrain your social life from going until 4 a.m. And yes, having your own minifridge is everything you thought it would be.

Student splits time between E.L., Capitol

I’ll admit it took me a while to become comfortable with the idea of living in Lansing. I lived in East Lansing for 16 years — elementary through high school and one year after — and spent exactly zero time doing anything in Michigan’s Capitol. It really wasn’t until I was strapped for cash that I began hanging out in Lansing — and only then because I had to live there.
