Protests need clarity, credibility to be effective

It is the students’ right to protest, but in order for such protests to be successful, they need to have an organized stance. Different concerns shouldn’t be downplayed, but they can’t be promoted all at once in a cacophony of hoots and hollers.

Someone once told me to never tell yourself something you would not say to another person. Basically, “treat yourself the way you would want to be treated.” I do not believe many people would tell another person they are fat, so why would one say that to themselves?

Current Spartans logo design will remain

MSU will continue to use the current Spartans head logo, not the proposed one, to build the university’s visual brand identity, Athletics Director Mark Hollis announced Friday. “After careful consideration, we will use the current Spartan logo design, first used in the late 1970s, to build our visual brand identity,” Hollis said in an open letter to MSU fans.

James Madison College holds career fair

Before Laura Casey graduated from MSU in 1993, the James Madison College alumna and OnStar satellite radio services manager said she had a “major of the week” during her sophomore year. “I would pull out the big course book and every week I’d write out a new career and post it on the wall,” she said.

MSU hosts children's chess tournament

Elementary and middle school students from across the state took over the Union on Saturday with family, coaches, teachers and chess boards in tow. Students filled the first floor of the building as early as 7 a.m. with coolers, blankets, pillows and folding chairs in anticipation of the Michigan Scholastic Chess Tournament. Playing with their friends, tournament competitors laughed and chased each other in the hallways and outside. As the tournament commenced, however, the atmosphere upstairs became much more serious.

Remember when you joked that the MSU men’s basketball would go 18-0 in the Big Ten? Remember when a little part of you actually thought the Spartans could go 18-0? Welcome back to reality. MSU’s 78-73 loss at Illinois on Saturday has slimmed MSU’s lead in the Big Ten to just one game with No. 8 Purdue coming into East Lansing.

The MSU wrestling team has been searching for a consistent effort throughout its entire lineup. The Spartans got it Sunday in a 20-13 upset of No. 24 Purdue that was highlighted by close matches and several dramatic finishes.
