Three more football players plead guilty to Rather Hall assault charges

Sophomore wide receiver Fred Smith, former redshirt freshman defensive end Jamiihr Williams and former junior safety Roderick Jenrette pleaded guilty to various assault charges Thursday in East Lansing’s 54-B District Court. The charges stem from a Nov. 22, 2009 incident in Rather Hall, where 15 football players allegedly entered the dorm and assaulted members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity, witnesses said.

A 17-year-old female MSU student sustained minor injuries after she was involved in an altercation with another female student over a beverage in Hubbard Hall, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Drake scheduled to perform on campus

Up-and-coming Canadian rapper Drake is scheduled to perform at MSU in April, although details about the rapper’s performance remain uncertain. Tour dates for Drake’s The Away from Home Tour indicate the rapper is scheduled to perform at MSU on April 14. His Web site does not specify a venue.

Board to vote on student 'Bill of Rights'

The MSU Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the progress of several campus construction projects and also might approve a student rights and responsibilities document at its meeting Friday. The meeting is scheduled to take place at 9:30 a.m. in Room 401 of the Administration Building.

Fewer stimulus funds available for 2010-11 year

Dwindling stimulus dollars mean Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Michigan lawmakers will have a tough time balancing the state’s 2010-11 fiscal year budget. More than $3.3 billion of federal stimulus money has been used in the past two years to balance the state’s budget, but this year Granholm and state lawmakers need to eliminate a projected $1.7 billion deficit with the aid of only $395 million of federal stimulus funding.

Moran and two other crew members traveled 30 minutes from their temporary home in the Mars Desert Research Station to Olympus Mons, a Martian mountain three times the size of Mount Everest.

A report released by Massachusetts-based policy think tank MassINC found students and their families often do not make the best financial investments in higher education because of a lack of readily available information.

Ilitch drops out of gubernatorial race

Detroit businesswoman and University of Michigan regent Denise Ilitch announced she will not run for governor despite being the Democratic front-runner, according to a January poll. Ilitch said in a statement that time constraints were the main reason for her exit, but she will not rule out further endeavors into public office.

MSU receives gift for freshman engineering program

With a gift of $150,000, MSU has its first sponsor for a relatively new program geared toward giving students real-life experience in the field of engineering. Consumers Energy and the Consumers Energy Foundation donated the money as the inaugural gift for the Engineering Theme Partnership Program, or ETPP. The program lies within the less than two-year-old Residential Experience and Cornerstone Engineering program, or RECE, which acts as a first-year experience for freshmen majoring in engineering.

Economy affects agency attendence at career fair

Optimistic students braved the winter weather and poor economy Wednesday to attend the annual criminal justice career fair. Despite the fair peaking last year at 82 agencies and falling 15 percent to 20 percent this year, Tim Homberg, career development coordinator for MSU’s School of Criminal Justice, said he is expecting a better fair next year.

Biomass center changes name

The Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, or MAES, has renamed its Escanaba, Mich., facility, originally known as the Upper Peninsula Tree Improvement Center, or UPTIC, to the Michigan State University Forest Biomass Innovation Center.

MSU saves money on snow clean up

Tuesday’s snowstorm gave MSU Landscape Services an opportunity to clear roads without clearing out the bank. Employees cleaned a majority of campus sidewalks and roads by about 8 a.m. Wednesday, but a diluted liquid salt pretreatment gave the department more time to bring in additional help, said Gerry Dobbs, MSU Landscape Services manager.

Series to address violence against women

The Spring 2010 Colloquium Series is slated for 1:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Room 302 of the International Center and will feature the presentation MSU’s Violence Against Women Research and Outreach Initiative: Impacting Policy and Practice Through Feminist Action Research.

MSU received $1,483,194 in U.S. Department of Agriculture research grants for animal health and production, according to USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, or NIFA. MSU is among more than 30 universities to receive a share of the $24 million in funding.

Spartans prepare for another 3-point shooting team in U-M

There’s nothing like a rivalry game to get a team going after a tough loss. Following Sunday’s disappointing loss at Iowa, the MSU women’s basketball team will be anxious to get back at it tonight when they head to Crisler Arena to play Michigan at 7 p.m. Four days after the team struggled defensively against the Hawkeyes, MSU goes into Ann Arbor against a team that will play a very similar style — drive to the basket and either put up a shot or kick out for a 3-point attempt.

Klages hopes gymnasts 'take it to next level' Sunday vs. Illinois

Despite coming off its two highest-scoring performances of the season, the No. 22 MSU gymnastics team only is thinking about scoring higher as it prepares for this weekend’s meet at Illinois. The Spartans scored a 194.550 in a second-place finish at Western Michigan last weekend after pulling together a season-best 194.875 the previous weekend against Ohio State.

Teike impressive in rookie campaign

After competing strongly in a national tournament as a 12-year-old, Shanthi Teike knew gymnastics was the right path for her. What she might not have expected was finding a lot of success this early in her collegiate career. Teike, a freshman MSU gymnast, has been one of the Spartans’ most consistent performers this season, regularly finishing in the top five and proving to be a nice complement to the team’s juniors and seniors.
