Spartans look to overcome injuries in Sweet 16

Heading into the Sweet 16, the Spartans hope to overcome injuries. Junior guard Kalin Lucas will be sidelined for four to six months after rupturing his left Achilles tendon. Delvon Roe continues to fight through pain in his right knee. Junior guard Chris Allen did not practice Tuesday, but both Allen and Roe are expected to play.

E.L. acupuncturist speaks to MSU Chinese Club students

Philosophy senior Brittany Collins held perfectly still as needles were inserted into her ears and wrists Tuesday evening, while other students watched in amazement. Collins was one of several students who volunteered to try the treatment when East Lansing acupuncturist Shalena Havens visited the MSU Chinese Club Tuesday at Wells Hall. The presentation was one of several activities used to teach members of the club parts of Chinese culture and prepare them for study abroad in China.

MSU Extension to research different biofuel croplands

A grant awarded to the MSU Extension will allow researchers to look into the feasibility of planting crops that could be used for biofuels on nontraditional croplands such as Michigan roadways, vacant lots and state-owned pieces of land. Provided by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth, or DELEG, the $24,950 grant was announced Friday.

MSU students, profs share global culture

It might have come as a bit of a disappointment that Felix Yeboah has never seen a tiger. Yeboah, a natural resource management graduate student, is one of MSU’s international students from Ghana, a small country in Western Africa. He spoke Tuesday at Holt High School’s fourth annual World Language Week. The weeklong event began Monday and will continue through Friday.

Census Road Tour will stop in E.L.

The Census Road Tour Celebration will make a stop at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ann Street Plaza in downtown East Lansing and will bring giveaways, free food, a DJ and surprise celebrity guests. The event, which lasts until 10 p.m., is part of the U.S.

Free suture clinic to be held in April

The Pre-Student Osteopathic Medical Association will hold a suture clinic at 7 p.m. April 20 in Room A149 of the Plant and Soil Sciences Building. Doctors and medical students will be on hand to teach attendees suturing techniques on pigs’ feet.

Fundraiser helps to pay families' bills

A fundraiser hosted by the Lansing Board of Water & Light on March 4 collected more than $7,500 to help pay the utility bills of area families who are struggling to make the payments. BWL customers contribute nearly $40,000 every year to the event, which is known as Pennies for Power.

Alumni from Mont. to introduce craft beers to MSU

Big Sky Brewery, based out of Montana and founded by former Spartans Neal Leathers and Brad Robinson, along with mutual friend Bjorn Nabozney from Montana, are introducing their beers to Michigan this week, starting in East Lansing. Leathers will introduce Moose Drool, one of the brewery’s beers, to local bars and will be at Crunchy’s, 254 W. Grand River Ave., Thursday night to meet with old friends and promote his craft beer on MSU’s campus.

Fifteen years ago, Kordell Stewart made waves with his athleticism as a multiple-weapon threat with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. On Tuesday, the opening day for MSU football spring practice, head coach Mark Dantonio seemed convinced the Spartans have found their own “Slash.”

Signing of health care bill historic moment for U.S.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt went down in history for by the New Deal. Ronald Reagan helped bring down communism. George W. Bush will be remembered for Sept. 11. Tuesday, President Barack Obama signed into law a massive health care reform that is likely to define his presidency for decades to come.

New health care plan will benefit everyone

By signing the massive health care reform bill into law, Obama will go down as passing one of the most epic pieces of legislation in American history, no matter how a person views it. And instead of failing and weakening his stance on other issues after making health care a top priority, Obama likely will see a little bit of a increase in support, despite all the naysayers.

MSU senior remembered for creativity dies in car crash

A 21-year-old female MSU student died Tuesday morning after her vehicle struck a tree Tuesday morning in Saline, Mich. Horticulture senior Ruthie Smith, of Midland, Mich., died after her Lexus SUV hit a tree at about 2:50 a.m. Tuesday morning, Saline police said. She was described by friends and family as a loving person who enjoyed nature and flowers and was kind to everyone she knew.

Despite loss, Spartans' 4 seniors left mark on program

MSU’s four seniors deserved better than the way their careers ended Monday. The Spartans’ 70-52 loss to Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday at Freedom Hall signaled the end for Lauren Aitch, Allyssa DeHaan, Aisha Jefferson and Mandy Piechowski, and the ugly loss was an unfortunate final chapter for four women who gave everything they had to the program for their entire careers. Police brief 03/23/10

A 42-year-old Adrian, Mich., man was cited for trespassing at Breslin Center on Thursday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man was attending a high school basketball game and was heavily intoxicated, McGlothian-Taylor said. He was placed under arrest and officers requested the man seek medical attention. He was transferred to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.
