Spartans fans gather to send off basketball team

A dedicated group of Spartan fans took advantage of the good weather to bid the No. 5-seed MSU men’s basketball team adieu as they head to the Final Four in Indianapolis. More than 100 people from MSU and the surrounding community cheered on head coach Tom Izzo and his players as they embarked from Breslin on a trip through Lansing and East Lansing that would give the Spartan faithful a chance to cheer for the team as they left town.

Critics of pope, Church should examine facts

I’m finding myself more distracted this Holy Week than in years past — and it’s not just because of the basketball game. For the past few weeks, my church — the Catholic Church — has been going through a crucible of criticism. More information is coming to light about the terrible acts of sexual abuse committed by the Catholic clergy, and this time, people are calling for the pope’s head.

Men's basketball send-off set for 3 p.m.

Spartans fans are encouraged to help send off Tom Izzo and the MSU men’s basketball team to the Final Four by lining the streets at 3 p.m. Wednesday along the bus route from Breslin Center to the state Capitol. The bus will be leaving Breslin Center, taking Harrison Road to Michigan Avenue and continuing to the Capitol.

The MSU College Assistance Migrant Program assists students who work or have parents who work as migratory or seasonal farm workers. Supported by the U.S. Department of Education, the MSU program is awaiting a possible funding renewal this summer.

Frat leases new location, still fighting for old house

Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity decided not to wait for what might be the inevitable sale of its 128 Collingwood Drive home, signing a lease Monday at the former Sigma Alpha Epsilon house, 342 N. Harrison Road. The fraternity likely will lose its original home — which, at 83 years old, is MSU’s longest-standing greek home and located in a city historical district — if a site plan to make an addition to the structure’s rear complies with a historical district ordinance.

Students struggle to find Final Four tickets

Tickets for MSU’s Final Four matchup against Butler were on sale midnight on Sunday. Members of the Izzone had a chance to buy $25 tickets, but only minutes after going on sale, most of the 660 available tickets were sold out. Some Spartans fans still are scrambling to get tickets.

Students speak about budget cut concerns

About 40 students met with university administrators Tuesday to voice concerns about potential budget cuts to programs aimed at multicultural students, including a potential 7 percent cut to the Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions, or OCAT.

MSU College of Nursing uses online simulation to educate

For MSU’s College of Nursing, education is going virtual as the school explores Spartan Health Island, an online community that allow students to become avatars and simulate home visits with patients. Spartan Health Island, located within the online community of Second Life, has been implemented in the course Nursing 470, Community Health and Population Nursing.

Christine Harder chooses to spend a lot of her time digging through worm poop. The poop, or worm casting, is used as a healthy, nonchemical, and basically free fertilizer for plants. The interdisciplinary studies in social science and environmental policy and Spanish senior interns at Michigan Energy Options, 405 Grove St., and her favorite part of the job is the compost education program.

MSU club hosts egg-painting event

The MSU Polish Club hosted an egg-ornamenting event Tuesday in celebration of this weekend’s Easter holiday. Pisanki, derived from the Polish word “pisac” meaning “to write,” is the term used to describe the technique of decorating an egg with any pattern or image desired.
