By now you’ve probably heard about the recent militia plot to kill police officers. According to federal investigators, a militia based out of Adrian, Mich., hoped to incite a larger uprising through violent confrontation with federal forces.

MSU breaks ground on plant science expansion

MSU officials broke ground Friday on a $43 million expansion to the Plant and Soil Sciences building that is aimed at enhancing the national and international profiles of plant science research at the university. The expansion, authorized by the MSU Board of Trustees in December 2009, will connect the plant sciences building with the Plant Biology Laboratories, both of which are located on the southwest corner of Bogue Street and Wilson Road.

Non-tenure track faculty rally for union contract

About 30 students and members of the Union of Nontenure-Track Faculty, or UNTF, sang, chanted and carried signs with phrases such as, “MSU Works Because We Do” outside Friday’s Board of Trustees meeting as part of a rally for a union contract. The rally, held oustide of the Administration Building, was in support of “fair and timely” contract negotiations with the university.

Increase in room and board rates approved

Room and board rates for the 2010-11 academic year will increase by 5.1 percent after the MSU Board of Trustees on Friday unanimously approved the increase. The base annual rate for double room and board will increase from $7,394 — the 2009-10 rate — to $7,770, an increase of $376.

Fire victims show gratitude for aid

After a fire destroyed their house Friday morning, 10 MSU students and one Lansing Community College student said they’re thankful for the support they’ve received from the community. The students now are living together in Brody Complex.

Drinking down

MSU uses the Social Norms campaign to curb high-risk drinking. There are misconceptions on campus that the majority of students are drinking more than they actually are. However, not everybody is drinking. MSU hopes to continue to educate students about the truths of drinking behavior.

5 MSU grad programs rank No. 1

MSU has received the top spot in nuclear physics studies according to nationwide rankings of graduate schools released Thursday by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, four graduate programs — elementary and secondary education, rehabilitation counseling and industrial and organizational psychology — claimed No. 1 spots in the 2011 report on America’s Best Graduate Schools.

Drawing marathon event inspires artists

The MSU Department of Art and Art History hosted its annual Drawing Marathon event outside on a warm afternoon, open to all curious MSU students heading to class.

ASMSU approves 2010-11 operating budget

ASMSU unanimously passed the 2010-11 operating budget at its Student Assembly meeting Thursday night. Total tax revenue increased by nearly $300,000 from the 2009-10 ASMSU budget because of increased enrollment and money for the Readership Program, Student Assembly Chairperson Kyle Dysarz said. Dysarz said most of the changes to the budget were meant to streamline budget costs. “There were a couple of broad things we did in terms of consolidation,” Dysarz said.

Dance-a-thon to raise funds for Africa's youth

Serving Citizens Of Uganda Today Because Africa Needs A New Ambulance, or SCOUT BANANA — a global nonprofit organization that raises money for groups working to improve conditions in Africa — will host its annual dance-a-thon from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday night at Adams Field.

MSU student receives Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Genomics and molecular genetics junior Tasneem Pierce is one of up to 300 recipients of the 2010 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The science and engineering award covers $7,500 of undergraduate tuition, fees, books, as well as room and board for up to two years to be used the following academic year.

Teams engage in engineering project

Six teams of three to four students each presented an original idea in biosystems engineering, the culmination of two semester’s worth of work, at the 2010 Biosystems Engineering Design Project Showcase on Thursday afternoon at Kellogg Center.
