Farm Lane project earns award

The partnership developed to complete the “Bridge to the Future” Farm Lane project recently received a gold award from the National Partnership for Highway Quality, or NPHQ. Executive Director Bob Templeton presented the award to MSU, the Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, as well as their planning and construction partners at last week’s State Transportation Commission meeting in Lansing.

MSU, others donate $14B to state economy

Michigan’s three largest universities contributed about $14.8 billion to the state’s economy in 2009, in spite of the region’s inability to experience positive economic growth, according to a report released Thursday. The University Research Corridor, or URC, — comprised of MSU, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University — increased its economic impact to the state by about 15 percent from about $12.9 billion in 2006, said Patrick Anderson, founder of Anderson Economic Group which led the 2010 Empowering Michigan report. “The research universities should be commended for benchmarking themselves,” he said.

Mich. could lose seat in House, new study says

The state of Michigan could lose a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives when the 2010 census results are finalized because of lower population numbers, according to a new projection by Election Data Services, a Washington, D.C.-based political consulting firm.

Making it better

From the suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi to the harassment of University of Michigan Student Assembly President Chris Armstrong by a government official, the violent results of homophobia have caused a stir nationwide during the past few weeks. In response to the events, Doebler, along with close to 100 MSU community members, participated in a vigil Wednesday evening at Beaumont Tower to commemorate those that have been lost as well as to allow those who might be struggling the chance to speak out.

New chair of advertising to join MSU if confirmed

Jef Richards will be recommended to the MSU Board of Trustees for appointment as the new chairman of the MSU Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Retailing. He will replace current chair Richard Cole, who is stepping down after holding the position for five years.

Community comes together to remember student

In the week since, the campus has come together to remember MSU senior Ruben Zaimi’s life. Little signs of him have shown up across campus. The rock on Farm Lane was painted with his name Monday. The soft glow of dozens of candles lit up Mary Mayo Hall courtyard Wednesday night.

Art work dedicated following vandalism, criticism

Four months after its installation and multiple instances of vandalism, university officials and the creator of Funambulist dedicated the piece in a ceremony Wednesday. The fabricated steel structure, which stands more than 25 feet tall and 36 feet wide, attempts to incorporate the balance college students must keep while they walk on a thin line before graduation, said John Van Alstine, the artist who created the sculpture. “It has more (of a) universal meaning because we’re all on our wire per se,” he said.
