ASMSU veteran to be next year’s chief of staff

When Eric Branoff was elected chairman of ASMSU’s Student Assembly in spring 2010, he instead resigned, opting for a year-long study program in Amman, Jordan. Now, he’ll be taking over as chief of staff — a position held by Kara Spencer since 2007. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government. Branoff said he’s been maintaining regular contact with ASMSU officials, despite being overseas, to help the organization make the transition from bicameral to unicameral a smooth one. “I have begun to speak with (Spencer) on changes with the structure of ASMSU, so I am well aware of the challenges that the organization will surely confront this summer,” he said in an email. Branoff said he feels his responsibilities are first and foremost to the chairperson of the future General Assembly and to the General Assembly itself. “I see my duties and responsibilities as chief of staff as remaining neutral and apolitical in the affairs of ASMSU,” he said. He also cited organizing elections in accordance with ASMSU’s constitution and code and acting as a liaison between ASMSU and its alumni foundation as other responsibilities. Having prior experience with ASMSU as a representative and former vice chairman for external affairs is helpful, Branoff said. “I feel confident that my past time with ASMSU will help me make a quick and smooth transition,” he said. Others echo that confidence.
