MSU lineman returns to field after fighting cancer

MSU offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr. has been added to the active spring roster Thursday after undergoing a bout with bone cancer. His return to the football field is complete after the NCAA granted a waiver on his behalf and he was scheduled to practice Thursday.

A higher goal

Kathryn Mahoney and Piotr Pasik were once perfect strangers. Despite not knowing one another, both are athletes — Mahoney a Academic All-Big Ten gymnast, and a leader on the Spartans’ lineup; Pasik a first-year graduate student specializing in rehabilitation counseling who plays on several intramural soccer teams. And both face physical challenges.

Speakers for graduation announced

Next month, the co-founder of the company responsible for the Macintosh, the iPod and the iPhone will address MSU’s class of 2011 graduating seniors. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc. — now Apple Inc. — has been announced as the speaker of the 1 p.m.

Government shutdown a possibility

The first federal government shutdown in 15 years looms as Congress and President Barack Obama exchange barbs and proposals on how to spend money, and MSU professors say the nationwide implications are vast. Consumer confidence in an already fragile economy could tumble, university experts say, and a shutdown of any kind could have dire consequences. The shutdown might happen because a short-term funding measure passed three weeks ago by Congress is set to expire at midnight Friday.

E.L. to allow street vendors, add new business outlets

City dwellers might start to see more vendors selling their wares on the streets with the recent implementation of changes to concessionaire policy in East Lansing. The policy formerly allowed vendors to apply for licenses and to operate in the community every day from 7 a.m.

MSU wins bike friendly award

When Thomas Baumann moved off campus from his residence in Cherry Lane Apartments, he decided against renewing his MSU parking pass. Now, he uses his bike to travel the two miles from his home to his job as a beam physicist in the Cyclotron every day.
