Three college students accused of supplying alcohol to minors plead guilty

The three college students accused of supplying alcohol to four teenagers at a party leading to a fatal car crash, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in 55th District Court today. MSU students Charles King III and Jordan Henika and their roommate, Lansing Community College student Michael Freund, each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to contribute to the delinquency of a minor, Freund’s lawyer Scott Mertens said. Mertens said the students feel terrible for what happened and for the victims’ families, but they do not feel they contributed directly to the deaths and their pleas are reflective of that, he said. “There was one thing our clients were guilty of — holding a keg party and not monitoring who was consuming alcohol,” Mertens said.

Trustee chooses MSU over Greektown Casino

MSU Trustee Joel Ferguson said he will keep his position at MSU if he’s not allowed to serve on both the MSU Board of Trustees and Detroit’s Greektown Casino board of directors. Ferguson said he was considering a position on the Greektown board in June 2010 — one he’s been contemplating since — but Greektown officials have said a 1996 Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act prohibits all elected officials from serving on a casino board of control. “If I can’t work this out and I have to choose, I’ll stay at MSU,” Ferguson said. Ferguson was elected first to the Board of Trustees in 1986 and currently serves as chairman.

Lansing areas look to share resources

The East Lansing Fire Department and five other fire departments in the Lansing area are looking into options to further efficiency and reduce expenses by sharing resources. Discussions between Lansing, Delta, Delhi and Meridian townships, as well as the cities of Lansing and East Lansing, began last summer, East Lansing Fire Chief Randall Talifarro said. To gather more information on viable options, the municipalities are considering a study that will investigate the most effective ways for the departments to operate, Talifarro said. With the recent loss of state revenue sharing, the municipalities are considering consolidating departments or cooperating in other ways to save money, Talifarro said. “We’re trying to build on what’s similar and where we have common ground,” he said.
