Word on the street

Today marked the first snowfall of the season in East Lansing with a light dusting of snow on the ground across campus by late afternoon. The cold temperatures are not expected to last, as the high for Saturday and Sunday are in the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

Sexual assault persists on campus

There currently are 47,954 students enrolled at MSU; 25,008 of those students are women. This means one in four of them, or 6,252, has been or will be the victim of rape or attempted rape during her MSU career, according to the Department of Justice.

Veterans Day used to promote war

I’m a 1969 MSU grad and a veteran. I was in the U.S. Army, infantry, in Vietnam. I think Veterans Day has been subverted from its original intent and now is just one more tool used to build the myth that the solution to conflict is military action.

Governance requires student leader input

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government and MSU administrators are questioning the effectiveness of student representation in the Academic Governance system. The administration deserves criticism for its inability to make students feel heard, but students also should be criticized for not contributing much to the conversation.

Dennis Norton was hesitant to approach his father. The subject of war had been taboo for years. His father, Austin Norton, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) but had never been able to talk about what he saw. But his son decided to take the plunge.

ROCHESTER, Mich. — In the biggest spotlight for Michigan yet in the 2012 presidential race, leading Republican candidates gathered at Oakland University on Wednesday night to debate solutions for the nation’s struggling economy.

ASMSU role in policymaking unclear

Years of fluctuating student participation in the Academic Governance system has prompted administrators and ASMSU to reexamine the student voice in university policymaking. ASMSU is MSU’s undergraduate student government. ASMSU Provost Zach Taylor said administrators have questioned whether students should continue to be involved, as ASMSU has had difficulties engaging with the governance system in years past, including having difficulty filling student seats and a lack of quality student participation. Students can hold about 50 total seats in Academic Governance, and currently students hold about 40, Taylor said.

Soccer team falls short to Indiana

The MSU men’s soccer team saw its season come to an end Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament in the quarterfinals. The Spartans fell behind 2-0 in the first 47 minutes before netting a goal in the 81st minute. The Hoosiers netted the first goal in the 38th minute with a shot from about 22 yards out.
