Students, E.L. permanent residents try to work it out

Since the university first opened its doors in 1855, the city of East Lansing has had to balance the relationship between MSU’s student body and the city’s permanent residents. As both city and campus have grown, East Lansing’s 48,579 residents have found a way to coexist with MSU’s 45,998 students, despite the disparity between the lifestyle of a college student compared to that of families that might live in the area. The cultural differences between the two groups has been a point of contention in the past, with loud parties, littering and alcohol use causing a rift.

The State News: What came before your position at the ELPD? Chad Stemen: I went to MSU for a criminal justice degree then I worked for Ingham County Sheriff’s Office … I did homeland security planning and emergency preparedness, planning for disasters — natural or man-made incidents — and a lot of work with the public safety area, fire EMS and the police sector. SN: Why did you want to go into criminal justice? CS: As a kid growing up, I always wanted to be a police officer and it just kind of fell into my path … Also working at the sheriff’s office, I had a lot of good mentors there and they pushed me into the direction that I’m heading right now. SN: What do you hope to bring to the East Lansing community? CS: I’m young — I can deal with the student population.

New football ticket system provides temporary difficulties

Early Wednesday morning, many football enthusiasts looking to purchase tickets for the upcoming season experienced difficulties and had to postpone their shopping. A new system, which is designed to provide fans with a convenient online seat-selection process, experienced technical issues and shut down for about 2-3 hours at about midnight on Wednesday when too many people tried to use it, Athletics Director Mark Hollis said.

With the College of Education’s recent announcement of a new pilot program involving classroom iPads comes another reaffirmation of MSU’s dedication to technology, innovation and research. The Center for Teaching and Technology, or CTT, will purchase about 60 iPads for two 30-person courses each semester of the 2012-13 school year.
