Last Tuesday was a disappointing night for more reasons than just basketball. As my friends and I piled out of Crunchy’s and into the cold, both our spirits and bank accounts had taken a significant hit.

Router determined as cause of overnight Internet issues

As of about 5 a.m. this morning, Internet is back on with no interruptions across the state after last night’s difficulties. Just before midnight Tuesday evening, all of Merit Network’s Internet users had difficulty connecting to the Internet as a result of an issue with a router at a Merit facility in Chicago.

Reports: MSU to hire former Ohio State coordinator as Roushar replacement

Former Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman is set to become MSU football’s next offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports citing anonymous sources. MSU has yet to officially confirm the hire. Bollman previously accepted the offensive line coach position at Purdue this off-season after serving as offensive line coach and run game coordinator at Boston College in 2012. MSU head coach Mark Dantonio and Bollman worked together as assistants under former Spartan coach Nick Saban from 1995-97 and again at Ohio State under Jim Tressel.

Spending cuts put students at risk

The $85 billion in federal spending cuts expected to affect thousands of Americans on Friday could mean the end of Zachary Ray’s job. The computer science sophomore is an assistant in the MSU Office of Financial Aid through the College Work-Study Program.

Summer enrollment expected to continue rising

After absentmindedly missing an exam in his online TC 201 class, Jacob Shutty is re-evaluating his summer academic plans. The media and information freshman is one of many students who are considering taking a summer class — a move becoming more common among MSU students, according to the Office of the Registrar. According to the office, throughout the past 10 years, total summer class enrollments have increased steadily, reaching 48,695 total enrollments in summer 2012 — an increase of 2.5 percent from summer 2011.

Health care plan cost to increase

The cost of MSU’s health care plan will continuously increase throughout the next six years to meet the new requirements of the Affordable Care Act, or ACA. At Tuesday afternoon’s University Council meeting, Renee Rivard, the director of benefits with MSU Human Resources, or HR, presented the impacts the ACA will have on MSU from 2012 through 2018.
