Clem, Gauruder duke out starting goalie spot

Heading into the season, Courtney Clem was the No. 1 goalkeeper for the MSU women’s soccer team. With just six games remaining on the schedule and an important Big Ten match against Ohio State on Saturday, the junior goalkeeper will be competing in practice this week to keep the top spot with sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder.

OSU next in line for on-fire men's soccer team

The men’s soccer team had a good week last week, to say the least. MSU (7-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 Big Ten) went on the road and beat University of Illinois-Chicago 2-0 to earn their sixth shutout of the season last Tuesday. Shortly after, the Spartans upset No. 5 Northwestern 3-2 in double overtime on the Wildcats’ home turf Sunday afternoon.

Alumni create Bar Crawl Bingo app

Bar crawls are a fun college tradition, and with the creation of a new app, these adventures can be taken to a whole new level. Alumni Paul Recchia and Erik Sundberg have created Bar Crawl Bingo, an app that combines the amusement of bar crawls with the gambling game bingo. Recchia, who developed concept, said users put in the names of select bars, favorite drinks and challenges.

John Gaboury to take over as Associate Provost for Academic Services

A leadership position that touches the academic lives of MSU students will change hands officially on Nov. 1, with the transition process already beginning. The post of Associate Provost for Academic Services will be taken over by John Gaboury who already spends two days a week at the university while he wraps up his duties at the University of Toledo.

Connor McCowan trial continues with testimony from father, crime scene investigators

The father of Okemos resident Connor McCowan continued his testimony during his son’s murder trial in Ingham County Circuit Court Tuesday morning. On the morning of Feb. 23, Randy McCowan said his son woke him at about 4 a.m., seeming “frantic and upset.” Connor McCowan then told his father about a scuffle with MSU student Andrew Singler, his sister’s boyfriend, saying he “feared for his life” and “cut” Singler.

Alleged murderer's sister, dad take stand as trial goes on

To Okemos resident Shay McCowan, her little brother is her best friend. She said her brother Connor McCowan, 19, became close with MSU student Andrew Singler after she began dating him in 2010. The group maintained a steady companionship until the early morning of Feb. 23, when an argument between the couple led to confrontation, culminating in Connor McCowan allegedly stabbing Singler to death.

Impact 89FM up for nat'l award despite funding issues

Despite so far losing its student tax funding for the second straight academic year, Impact 89FM has been nominated for the 2013 College Radio Station of the Year Award, given by the College Music Journal, the top North American journal for college radio. Impact 89FM will be competing against three other college radio stations for the award.

Face time: Jake Boss Jr.

A year after making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1979, the MSU baseball team narrowly missed the 64-team field this past spring. The Spartans finished with a 33-17 overall record and a 12-9 Big Ten record, but couldn’t quite crack the field as they were the first team left out of the tournament.?

Volleyball's Reinig living up to high expectations

Though she was listed as a starter early in the season, a bout with mononucleosis delayed freshman Chloe Reinig’s season debut. But judging by her performance since returning to the lineup three weeks ago, it’s easy to see why PrepVolleyball.com rated her the No. 4 recruit of the 2013 class.

Organizations build floats for Homecoming Parade

On Monday, 11 organizations began a weeklong process of creating a float worthy of winning over a panel of judges at Friday’s Homecoming Parade. Various organizations, including Spartans Fighting cancer, Lyman Briggs College and the MSU Black Alumni and Black Graduate Student Association, are working on the floats in Spartan Stadium that fit this year’s “Creating Spartan Super Heroes” theme.

MSU Surplus Store hosts weeklong Community ReUse days

Students planning to throw away anything from textbooks to old furniture can look to the MSU Surplus Store for a more sustainable alternative. The store’s Community ReUse Days allows MSU students, faculty and alumni to haul in their unwanted household items, which are then resold in the store or recycled.
