McDowell announcement brings relief for Spartan football

Malik McDowell is finally a Spartan.Nearly two months after National Signing Day, McDowell tweeted early Wednesday morning that he had sent his signed letter of intent to MSU on Tuesday night.The announcement brought with it fanfare and a Wednesday afternoon press conference with head coach Mark Dantonio.According to rivals.com, the 6-foot-6, 292 pound recruit is Dantonio’s only five-star player in the class, and brings the 2014 recruiting class to 22 players.This concludes the saga of McDowell, who announced his commitment to the Spartans on National Signing Day, but didn’t officially sign because disagreement with his parents, specifically his mother.

Promoting art should be bigger concern

This past Thursday marked the end of graduate student Betsy Ferrer’s art presentation in the RCAH Art Studio above the The Gallery at Snyder-Phillips Hall, which featured works from different artists hailing from the greater Kisumu area, located in western Kenya.The gallery displayed beautiful pieces ranging from still lifes to animals scenes to daily Kenyan life, which were being sold in hope of raising money for a new Kisumu art gallery for local artists to showcase their works.

Hollis, other prominent speakers keynote Failure:Lab

An unexpected 15-minute intermission highlighted the Failure:Lab event put on by ASMSU Tuesday night at Wharton Center.In front of a mostly-filled crowd, ASMSU welcomed the popular lecture series out of Grand Rapids to MSU, only to be interrupted about halfway through by what ushers said was smoke detected on the 4th floor.Audience members were ushered outside of Wharton Center until the East Lansing Fire Department was called and declared the scene safe.The theme of the night was overcoming past failures in life and using them to foster future success.

Local taxi drivers speak out at city council meeting

The city of East Lansing continues to struggle with an overload of available taxi services operating in the city, and local taxi drivers are starting to speak out.At the East Lansing city council meeting Tuesday night, cab drivers from the East Lansing cab company Shaggin' Wagon Taxi spoke out about the current cab situation, citing too many licensed cab drivers in the city taking away business from them.According to a previous interview with East Lansing city clerk Marie Wicks, there are over 190 licensed taxis with permits in the city.On top of that, there are plenty of other taxi services available that aren't licensed and are just started up by people who want to make some extra money.

A mix of worship and workouts introduced a new duel-purpose program to students called Fitness Fellowship Tuesday night in Akers Hall.The program was an hour-long service that began with an affirmation and prayer scripture.

ASMSU president constitutionality questioned, will attend hearing

The controversy continues in ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government, as the All University Student Hearing Board will meet on Thursday to review the findings of previous committees on whether or not current President Kiran Samra violated ASMSU code during her candidacy.According to a previous report, Samra allegedly violated the organization's elections code when applying to run for the position because of her previous role as chair of the Undergraduate Elections Commission, the group that oversees election processes.

One of three suspects in murder of Dustyn Frolka to plead guilty

Samantha Grigg, one of three charged with murder in the death of MSU’s Dustyn Frolka, is expected to plead guilty.Grigg’s attorney Ron Zawacki said to the Lansing State Journal that Grigg is expected to enter a plea on April 28 in the Clinton County Circuit Court.Grigg, along with Tyrel Bredernitz and Brendan Heim, face life in prison on charges of murder and robbery.
