Class is in session, and the word for the day is “cohesion.” When asked for the definition, the students stare back blankly at the teacher, unsure of how to answer.? But this is no English class.

Among MSU’s many registered student organizations, the Guitar Club is one that might have a quiet voice in publicity, but a loud one in musical sound.?On Friday evenings inside Holmes and Bessey Halls’ classrooms, one can hear the sound of an amplifier’s feedback and then any kind of Rock n’ Roll.

Folk music takes over Pump House

In the midst of East Lansing’s Saturday night snow storm, dozens of local residents gathered together at the Orchard Street Pump House listening room to hear three folk musicians sing the night away. Michigan-based singers Drew Howard, Josh Rose and Matt Dmits took the stage around 7 p.m. Silence swept over the room as the performers entertained the crowd with singing, guitar-playing and a few jokes.

Time to jam

As a student at MSU, Amber Teunis had little exposure to teaching children with special needs.? But when she began working as a music therapist at the MSU Community Music School, or CMS, the alumna discovered a whole new side of teaching.? Now a music therapist at CMS, Teunis assists music therapy program director Cindy Edgerton with several programs, including “Together … Let’s Jam!,” a walk-in session held monthly and sponsored by the Capital Area Down Syndrome Association.

Songwriting course to conclude with Thursday concert

As the semester comes to a close, 20 students enrolled in an MSU song writing course will have a chance to display their musical skills during a live concert. The students come from diverse musical backgrounds, said professor John Kratus, who teaches the course. From rapping to heavy metal, the students touch almost every genre of music, then compose and perform their pieces for classmates.

Indian Students Organization hosts annual Sargam dance

The Wharton Center hummed with Bollywood fever Saturday night as the cast members of this year’s Sargam took the stage in a vibrant display of Indian culture. Sargam is the Indian Students Organization’s annual song-and-dance show that features students acting and dancing to popular Hindi songs.

MSU students, jazz group perform at local venue

A group of MSU students known as the Nate Woodring Trio jazzed up (SCENE) Metrospace Wednesday night, bringing musical life through the drums and bass East Lansing. The show featured jazz studies senior Nate Woodring on drums, jazz studies sophomore Runere Brooks on bass and jazz studies graduate student Corey Kendrick on piano.

Face Time: East Lansing City Council candidate Joanna Bosse

MSU assistant professor Joanna Bosse has lived in many university towns, but said she’s experienced the most animosity between students and residents during her time in East Lansing. By running for the East Lansing City Council this fall, she hopes to use her experience interacting with both constituencies to help bridge the gap between town and gown.

Flash mob in Brody Hall promotes 'Flashdance the Musical'

As the ‘80s hit “Maniac” played in Brody Hall, bystanders were caught off guard as members of the MSU Dance Club and Wharton Center Student Marketing Organization broke out in a “Flashdance” rendition. The neon-shirted flash mob wandered into Brody Wednesday and performed a choreographed routine to promote “Flashdance the Musical” coming to Wharton Center Oct.

MSU-made band Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys return to Lansing area

Country boys and girls from Lansing and beyond gathered to hear melodic, sweat-drenched and Michigan-made musicians Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys on Sept. 14 The Loft. As folk, rock and country poured from the downtown Lansing venue, patrons danced, drank and reveled in the sound of well-tuned guitars and gritty ballads that concert-goers said could only be found in Michigan.

Common Ground returns

When the Common Ground Music Festival began in downtown Lansing, it originally focused on classic rock, but as the festival progresses into its 14th year, it now headlines some of the nation’s brightest stars along with upcoming local and regional talent. “We bring in a wide variety of diverse acts of all types of music,” said Scott Keith, board chair of Center Park Productions.
