Students display artistic fashion

Lauren Myers brought a little piece of Spain to Kresge Art Center on Wednesday, meshing her taste and artistic technique with that of renowned surrealism artist Salvador Dali. Myers, an apparel and textile design senior, exhibited a Dali-inspired gown and two other artistic design pieces in the 2010 Apparel and Textile Design Exhibition, along with 16 other undergraduate students, said Theresa Winge, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History.

Political program aids students

The Michigan Political Leadership Program, or MPLP, will introduce its 24 newest inductees at fundraising events Thursday and Friday in Grand Rapids and Livonia. The 18-year-old political training program was founded by MSU.

Counselors partner at Big Ten conference

The Big Ten Counseling Centers Conference kicked off Wednesday at Kellogg Center. The conference brings together staff and students who work at counseling centers at schools in the 11 Big Ten universities and other institutions for collaboration sessions.

MSU athletes give area preschoolers a taste of sports

Preschoolers had the chance on Wednesday to ask Spartan athletes the important questions: How often do you practice?What do you eat? And, most importantly, what is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Women’s basketball player Mandy Piechowski and track and field athletes Max Goldak and Elizabeth Rohl spoke to about 70 preschoolers at Spartan Childhood Development Center, 1730 Crescent Road, about their sports and answered questions.

Symposium set for next month

The 15th annual Quiet Water Symposium is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6 at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Schools set to use new garden tools

Michigan schools will be first in the nation to use new virtual gardening tools at MSU’s Indoor 4-H Children’s Garden on Friday. MSU Extension, or MSUE, partnered with the Michigan Department of Education to give 20 Michigan school administrators the opportunity to learn how to plant a school garden and then harvest the produce for use in the cafeteria.

Vigil held to mourn U.S. casualties

Study: human infection could be linked to cows

A bacteria found in many healthy women that can be deadly when passed onto babies could be transferred between cows and humans, according to a study conducted by MSU researchers. Group B streptococcus, or GBS, is a bacterium carried by up to 40 percent of women.

Writer visits WRA class, offers advice

A passion for writing that began in a college English class has taken Diane Glancy, a novelist, poet and most recently filmmaker, on a decades long journey that brought her to MSU this week. “Language is the foundation upon which I stand,” said Glancy, who visited WRA 125, The American Ethnic and Racial Experience, on Tuesday. She also spoke at a public event at the Main Library about her ongoing filmmaking project.

IHOP fundraiser benefits local children

IHOP restaurants nationwide partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network to offer free short stacks of pancakes and encourage people to donate money that would have been spent on them to the nearest Children’s Miracle Network-affiliated hospital.

MSU students will be given a chance throughout the week to address body image issues by participating in Olin Health Center’s activities for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week, said Ronda Bokram, a dietician at Olin Health Center.

Lansing police chief Alley set to retire

Lansing police Chief Mark Alley announced Tuesday he is retiring on March 12. Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero said in a statement he will name an interim chief in the coming days, and the department plans to do a national search for Alley’s replacement.
