Group holds fundraiser for Haiti

It’s been nearly seven weeks since an earthquake rocked Haiti, leaving close to 300,000 people dead and more than three million others in need of emergency aid. In an effort to raise money and awareness for the ongoing Haitian struggle, the Caribbean Student Association, or CSA, and the International Students Association hosted Help Haiti Heal on Friday at the Auditorium, a night celebrating Caribbean music.

ASMSU spring elections to begin at end of March

Officials from ASMSU — MSU’s undergraduate student government — have selected a date for its spring elections, which will feature two ballot issues. The tentative date for polls to open for ASMSU’s spring elections is March 29. ASMSU’s Readership Program referendum and a proposed change to ASMSU’s constitution will appear on the ballot.

MSU student takes $5,000 prize in Bright Idea competition

A portable shower, a recycling service and combining a bakery with a smoothie shop were just a few of the ideas presented at the Next Bright Idea competition Thursday at The Loft, 414 Michigan Ave., in Lansing. The first competition of its kind in the Lansing area, Next Bright Idea was started by the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, or LEAP, to foster and reward smart and innovative thinking and ideas aimed at making the world a better place.

2009 art festival is among top in nation

The East Lansing Art Festival received a national ranking of 117th in fine art sales and 153rd in fine craft sales in Art Fair SourceBook’s Top 200 of 2009. The rankings are determined by the festival’s gross average sales for 2009, which was $2,857 per artist exhibitor.

New tax credits to help businesses

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded more than $156.7 million in new tax credits Thursday to fund 11 job-generating ventures across the state. The tax credits will help 10 Michigan companies and back a brownfield redevelopment project.

All football players reach plea bargains

Three more MSU football players pleaded guilty Thursday to charges at East Lansing’s 54-B District Court stemming from a November 2009 fight. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Myles White and junior cornerback Chris L. Rucker each pleaded guilty to one count of assault and battery. Junior defensive tackle Oren Wilson pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery. Single counts of conspiracy to commit assault and battery against each player were dropped.

MSU student earns Cambridge full-ride

Kendell Pawelec, a materials science and engineering senior, was named a 2010 U.S. Gates Scholar and received a full-ride to Cambridge University in England.Pawelec is one of 29 students nationwide selected to receive the scholarship from about 800 applicants.

A pair of MSU sociology professors — Stan Kaplowitz and Harry Perlstadt — worked with Yale professor Lori Post to develop a simplified method of detecting lead poisoning in children. The research appeared in the March-April issue of Public Health Reports.

Students display artistic fashion

Lauren Myers brought a little piece of Spain to Kresge Art Center on Wednesday, meshing her taste and artistic technique with that of renowned surrealism artist Salvador Dali. Myers, an apparel and textile design senior, exhibited a Dali-inspired gown and two other artistic design pieces in the 2010 Apparel and Textile Design Exhibition, along with 16 other undergraduate students, said Theresa Winge, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Art History.

Preschoolers had the chance on Wednesday to ask Spartan athletes the important questions: How often do you practice?What do you eat? And, most importantly, what is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Women’s basketball player Mandy Piechowski and track and field athletes Max Goldak and Elizabeth Rohl spoke to about 70 preschoolers at Spartan Childhood Development Center, 1730 Crescent Road, about their sports and answered questions.
