MSU reaches goal of doubling study abroad enrollment in China

In 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong China” initiative with the goal to increase the number of students studying abroad in China.As a response to the initiative, 94 MSU students studied in China during the 2012-13 school year, a number double from the 2010-11 school year.Secretary of State Hilary Clinton launched the initiative in Beijing in 2010 and called upon institutions of higher education to increase their number of students studying in China by 2014.

Head Football Coach Mark Dantonio and the football team signed autographs for fans and other activities occurred at Spartan Stadium during the 12th annual “Meet The Spartans” event on Monday evening."Meet the Spartans" once took place at Meridian Mall in Okemos, but returned to Spartan Stadium for the second year.

Latimore said these aquatic hitchhikers, such as zebra mussels and the starry stonewort algae, are transported from one body of water to the next because they essentially hitch a ride on the bottoms of boats.Algae that might have been picked up from Lake Michigan will attach itself to the boat’s underside and fall off in another lake, giving it an opportunity to populate the lake.

People of all ages came out on Sunday to race their bikes at Gier Park in Lansing for a State Qualifier Race. Capital Area BMX, a non profit organization through USA BMX, hosted the event for participants of all ages.

Students, residents welcome opening of Apple Store in Lansing

An Apple Store has finally come to the Lansing area. Shoppers lined up outside the entrance Saturday morning at Eastwood Towne Center, anxiously waiting for the store’s grand opening at 10 a.m. The first 1,000 customers were given a free T-shirt. The Apple Store offers free workshops to customers so they can learn how to get the best use out of their Apple product, and those who need repairs can bring their product to the store for technical support.

City Council puts Park District Project plans to resident vote

East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas BW said the property at Albert Avenue and Abbot Road will most likely be replaced with an office building, the area east of Valley Court Park will be replaced with a residential building and parking ramp and the location between Abbot Road and Evergreen Avenue will possibly be replaced by a residential building for senior citizens.

MSU revamps misconduct hotline

MSU recently launched a revamped version of an already existing fiscal misconduct hotline, giving MSU community members an anonymous way to report a variety of misconduct, ranging from sexual assault to academic dishonesty. MSU spokesman Jason Cody said the hotline is not designed to replace 911, but instead is meant to encourage witnesses to speak up.

Proposal could set aside money for public art

A proposal is currently being considered by City Council, which would require one percent of the total cost of new developments in the area to be set aside for public art.The private sector component of the ordinance would require private developments costing $500,000 or more to pay an equivalent of one percent of the total cost of the development, which would be no more than $25,000.mr

In recent years, developers across East Lansing have been building apartment complexes that look more like resorts than student rentals.With amenities such as tanning beds, fitness centers, ball courts and study lounges, the apartment complexes are a one-stop-shop for both recreational and study needs.mr

Now that most of the renovation project is complete, Donovan said the East Lansing Rotary Club and the City of East Lansing are still reaching out to community members for donations so that their goal of $570,000 BW can be reached. Additional donations will go toward constructing a natural play area.

Los Angeles resident Lauren LoGrasso came back to her home state of Michigan for what she called a “mini-tour,” and approached Detroit resident Joei Redd and Lansing resident Sonya Major to be her openers.Originally, LoGrasso said she moved out to Los Angeles for an internship at The Ellen Show but stayed to pursue acting.
