New LGBTQ specialization celebrated by MSU community
Members of MSU’s LGBTQ community convened Friday afternoon in the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or RCAH, to celebrate the approval of MSU’s new specialization. The new specialization in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Sexuality Studies was approved over the summer, allowing students to enroll in the program this fall.

Researchers band birds to study effects of exotic plants
Students and faculty from MSU’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife raced to ?finish a bird catching project this weekend before the end of the season approached. The research project, headed by fisheries and wildlife ?assistant professor Jen Owen, is ?an effort to learn more about the impact of invasive plant species on bird health.

Wilder sexual assault case heads to circuit court
After appearing for a preliminary exam during which four alleged sexual assault victims testified, Oswald Scott Wilder Jr. will go to trial at Ingham County Circuit Court on Oct. 9, 54-B District Court Judge Andrea Larkin ruled Friday. Wilder, 26, is accused of initiating a string of sexual assaults that took place near campus earlier this year that occurred between March 30 and and May 16.

Planning commission raises doubts over proposal to ban new bars
The East Lansing Planning Commission deferred voting on a proposal to cap the number of bars downtown past for the second time Wednesday night, pending a report from the Downtown Development Authority.

The process of transforming the current East Lansing Amtrak Station into the CATA Multimodal Station can move forward now that the Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, obtained a grant originally announced in July 2012.

Study abroad fair to show students international travel opportunities
MSU’s annual Study Abroad Fair will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at Breslin Center. Each year, the fair, sponsored by the MSU Office of Study Abroad, provides students with the opportunity to explore the programs the university has to offer for that year.

Jobless rates rise, but education still worthwhile
Michigan jobless rates are up for the third month in a row, creeping to nine percent unemployment. The state was dubbed the nation’s fourth-most unemployed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But getting a college degree still seems to be the best pathway to a high-paying career.

Wilder will face testimony from alleged assault victims
The man accused of committing four sexual assaults in East Lansing this summer made his first court appearance Tuesday and soon will face testimony from all four of his alleged victims. Police believe Wilder, 26, initiated four sexual attacks near MSU’s campus between March 30 and May 16.

MSU benefits from Wayne State University tuition hike
MSU is slated to profit to the tune of $111,500 from an abnormally high tuition increase for Wayne State University students. WSU’s tuition increased by 8.9 percent this year — more than double that of other Michigan universities, whose average tuition increase was 3.45 percent.

Students create iPhone, Android app to promote financial literacy
MSU’s Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab, or the GEL Lab, recently released their latest application for iPhone and Android that is aimed at teaching a younger audience responsible financial habits. The lab partnered with MSU Federal Credit Union to create Saving Magic, an app in which players control a wizard-in-training protagonist who battles dragons that are stealing magic while collecting coins along the way.

Police crack down on drunk driving
A drunk driving crackdown in late August yielded more than 260 arrests throughout Michigan — including 45 drivers with a blood alcohol content of .17 or higher, according to an Office of Highway Safety Planning, or OHSP, press release. “Enforcement efforts like this save lives by putting extra officers on the road to stop and arrest impaired drivers and prevent other dangerous driving behaviors,” said Michael Prince, director of the OHSP in the press release. There were eight traffic deaths during Labor Day weekend, according to Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center.
