New bill allows LCC to offer bachelor degrees

Lansing Community College could open a bachelor of science in nursing program only five miles from MSU’s College of Nursing if a bill passed by the Michigan House of Representatives Thursday is passed into law. In a vote scrambled across party lines, both pieces of the two-bill package passed by a narrow margin — 55-49 and 55-48, respectively.

CATA encourages cleaner commute

The Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, is hosting its third annual Clean Commute Challenge today through Friday to encourage the public to participate actively in cleaner commuting and cleaner communities, said Edgerly, CATA’s Clean Commute Options coordinator.

Atty. general candidates continue campaign

Both candidates campaigning to become the next attorney general pledge to create safer streets in the state. In the Nov. 2 general election, voters will decide which man has the better plan. Democrat David Leyton will face Republican Bill Schuette in a race to replace term-limited attorney general and ex-GOP gubernatorial hopeful Mike Cox.

Wells Hall to receive upgrades and expansion

MSU officials gathered in the Wells Hall east plaza Thursday to take part in a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the official beginning of an expansion at the building. The expansion will add three stories above the B-wing of Wells Hall, adding about 88,000 square feet of additional learning space.

MSU Board to discuss Cyclotron

The MSU Board of Trustees will meet Friday to discuss proposals to proceed with construction at the MSU Cyclotron building, establish plans to replace the Main Library’s chilled water system and approve an expansion of IBM located inside the MSU Federal Credit Union’s former Crescent Road headquarters.

Group invites students, E. L. to help in post-game cleanup

Football Saturdays are known for tailgating, rowdiness and the thrill of the game, but the Sundays after can leave the streets of East Lansing strewn with trash. MSU’s Community Relations Coalition, or CRC, will be on hand Sunday to clean-up after MSU’s Saturday football game against Notre Dame. CRC is encouraging East Lansing residents ­— both students and long-term residents ­— to pitch in at 10:30 a.m.

After two years of operating in East Lansing, Snap Fitness has proven to be fit for business. Snap Fitness, located at 115 E. Grand River Ave., opened its doors during a time of economic recession. Many businesses felt the repercussions of a sluggish economy.

Flu vaccine expected to be more effective

Last year’s flu season conjures up images of long lines, repeat visits to the doctor and vaccine shortages, but with a new vaccine, local health officials are expecting a much smoother process this year. The 2010-11 vaccine, distributed by the federal government, will attack three strains of influenza including the H3N2 virus, the influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus, said James McCurtis Jr., a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Community Health, or MDCH. “It’s hard to say, but we hope numbers (of flu instances) will be down this year,” McCurtis said.

Block party brings E.L. community together

Crowds of students and East Lansing residents came together Wednesday evening to bring merge the two halves of a community. The event was the kick off for the Community Relations Coalition, or CRC’s, annual neighborhood block party at the Bailey Community Center, 300 Bailey St.

Study finds adhd often misdiagnosed

Almost 1 million children nationwide could be misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, according to a recent study by Todd Elder, MSU assistant professor of economics.
